UConn’s first road test of the season comes with a familiar twist.
When the Huskies head to Hattiesburg, Miss., to face Southern Miss on Saturday at 7 p.m. ET, it will be the first-ever meeting between the programs.
But the coaching matchup is anything but new. UConn’s Jason Candle and Southern Miss’ Blake Anderson know each other well, and both arrive at this one with the same kind of early-season résumé: one comfortable win over an FCS opponent, one rough loss to a Power Four team.
UConn opened by rolling past Lafayette 56-7 before getting handled by Maryland 38-14, both at home. Southern Miss started with a 49-3 win over Alcorn State in Hattiesburg, then ran into trouble at Auburn in a 43-8 loss. Same record, same basic storyline, same sense that Saturday will tell us a lot about where both teams stand.
There’s also a layer of history between the coaches. Candle’s Toledo teams beat Anderson’s Arkansas State program three times, including the 2015 GoDaddy.com Bowl.
Anderson, meanwhile, had UConn’s number during his Utah State days, winning back-to-back games against the Huskies in 2022 and 2023. Now they meet again, this time with both leading programs in the first season under their current staffs.
The roster turnover is massive on both sides. UConn brought in 87 new players and returns just one starter from the 2025 team.
Southern Miss added 74 newcomers and has two returning starters. That kind of reset explains a lot about why these two teams look so similar right now: new coaches, new pieces, and plenty still being sorted out.
Candle said earlier this week that Southern Miss is a familiar opponent and one that has already handled some of the same first-year program issues UConn is facing.
“Coach Anderson, Southern Miss. I mean, very familiar there.
Played them a couple times when he was at Arkansas State. … We’ve got some familiarity with guys there and they've done a good job in dealing with some of the issues that, you know, having a program for the first year that we're going through as well.
“So, I know it'll be a stiff challenge. They'll play really, really hard. And we got to go handle a road environment that I think will be a good one.”
Anderson returned the compliment, while also making clear he knows exactly what kind of team is coming to town.
“I know their head coach and have played against him and watched what he did at Toledo, and Jason's a phenomenal ball coach. They’ve built, I think, a really, really good roster. …
“They're well coached. They're playing extremely hard.
He's always had sound football teams. Not a lot of crazy mistakes.
You know, you got to earn it. You got to beat them.
I love that they got to come to us. Don't want to make that trip this week.”
UConn’s history against Sun Belt teams adds another layer. Since the 2022 season, the Huskies have played a Sun Belt opponent four times and are 1-3 in those games.
Saturday is the first of three Sun Belt matchups on the schedule this season, with James Madison coming to Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field on Nov. 14 and Old Dominion visiting on Nov. 21.
On offense, UConn has gotten strong production from Kalieb Osborne, who has completed 29 of 47 passes for 421 yards with four touchdowns and one interception. He has also been active on the ground, carrying 21 times for 120 yards and two scores. Trey Cornist has added 12 carries for 84 yards and a touchdown.
Southern Miss quarterback Ethan Hampton has gone 31-for-50 for 326 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions. On the ground, Steven Robinson leads the way with 38 carries for 174 yards and three touchdowns, while Jamarice Wilder has 17 carries for 101 yards and two scores.
Southern Miss’ receiving numbers include Mario Sanders with nine catches for 152 yards and a touchdown, and AJ Little with seven receptions for 65 yards.
On defense, the Golden Eagles are led by Laquan Robinson with 17 tackles and one pass breakup. Mathis Haygood has 15 tackles, 2 tackles for loss and 0.5 sacks, while Michael Robinson III has nine tackles and one forced fumble.
The game will air on ESPN+, with Jason Baker on play-by-play and Larry Boyd as analyst. On the radio, UConn football will be carried by FOX Sports 97.9 FM in Hartford, with Adam Giardino calling the action alongside analyst Wayne Norman and sideline reporter Michael Johnson.
