UConn opened its season the way a No. 4 team should, blasting Gardner-Webb 86-46 on Monday night at PeoplesBank Arena in Hartford. The win was comfortable from start to finish, but it still left one lingering question hanging over Dan Hurley’s group: how deep is this rotation really going to be?
The Huskies used 14 players in the game, so everybody got a look at the floor. Even so, only eight of them logged what would count as meaningful minutes, with more than six.
That’s where the curiosity starts. If this is the shape of UConn’s nightly rotation, an eight-man setup, then so be it.
But it does feel a little thin on the surface. Nobody is expecting 10 players to all be out there for 10 minutes or more every night, but having eight or nine guys you can trust usually matters.
There’s also the Solo Ball situation, which adds another layer to the early-season picture. Ball was announced as out for the season after wrist surgery, but the new “age-based eligibility model” changes the equation. At this point, it feels like there’s no downside to bringing him back for part of the season.
For now, the Huskies turn quickly to a much bigger test. They’re back on Friday night against No.
16 Michigan in the Hall of Fame Series in Boston, a rematch of last year’s national championship game that the Wolverines won. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m.
ET, and the game will air nationally on TNT.

UConn Gets A Rare Chance To Answer Last Week Against UNC
A familiar opponent is back on the schedule for UConn, and this one comes with a little extra edge attached. The Huskies will host North Carolina at Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field on Saturday, with kickoff set for 12:02 p.m. on CBS Sports Network, in the fifth all-time meeting between the programs.
It is the first time the teams have seen each other since UConn handled UNC in the 2024 Wasabi Fenway Bowl, a result that gives this matchup a built-in storyline beyond the usual nonconference meeting. The game also brings some notable sideline familiarity into the picture, adding another layer to a matchup that already has enough history to feel like more than a routine early-season test. UConn Added A New Teammate Who Already Means A Lot To This Program
A familiar face became an official part of the UConn mens basketball family this week, as the program welcomed a young teammate through its Team IMPACT partnership. The Huskies have long kept a close relationship with Connecticut Childrens Hospital, and this latest addition fits the way the program has tried to make its locker room feel bigger than basketball, with players and staff staying connected to children facing serious illnesses.
The new teammate has already been around the program for about two years, spending time at games and around the team before the formal signing ceremony. For UConn, it was another reminder that some of the most meaningful roster moves do not show up in box scores, and this one carries a weight the Huskies will feel well beyond the season.
