The UConn Huskies are gearing up to take on the 16th-seeded UTSA Roadrunners this Friday, and they're entering the matchup as the heavy favorites. Led by the legendary Geno Auriemma, the Huskies are eyeing yet another championship run in the Women's NCAA Basketball Tournament.
With a flawless 34-0 record, UConn has earned the No. 1 overall seed, setting the stage for an opening clash against UTSA at their home court, Gampel Pavilion, in Storrs, Connecticut. The Roadrunners, who clinched their spot by winning the American Conference tournament, come in as the sixth seed, having upset top-seeded Rice 54-40.
This marks UConn's 37th appearance in the tournament and the 15th time they've secured a No. 1 seed under Auriemma's guidance in his impressive 41-season tenure.
The Huskies are joined by other top seeds: UCLA (31-1), Texas (31-3), and South Carolina (31-3). Texas recently bested South Carolina 78-61 to capture their first SEC tournament title.
While UConn is a powerhouse, they're not the only team with championship aspirations. Sophomore sensation Sarah Strong, a frontrunner for National Player of the Year, leads the Huskies.
Meanwhile, UCLA boasts their own star in senior center Lauren Betts, another strong contender for the same award. The Bruins have been on a roll, winning 25 straight games since their sole loss to Texas.
Should UConn advance past UTSA, they'll face the winner between No. 8 Iowa State and No.
9 Syracuse. Success in that matchup would send them to the Fort Worth Regional 1.
Texas, placed in the same region, could enjoy a home-court advantage through the Elite Eight if they continue their winning ways.
Breaking down the tournament format, the initial rounds will see the highest seeds hosting games on their home courts. The first-round action kicks off Friday and Saturday, followed by second-round games on March 22 and 23. The Sweet 16 will see half the teams heading to Fort Worth, Texas, and the other half to Sacramento, California, with the regional winners advancing to the Final Four.
The tournament will culminate in Phoenix, where the Final Four games are set for April 3, leading up to the championship showdown on April 5. The stage is set for an exciting journey to crown the next national champion.
