UConn and Georgetown gear up for a pivotal Big East semifinal clash, each eager to secure a spot in the championship game.

UConn and Georgetown Eye Big East Tournament Glory

In the heart of New York, UConn bounced back from a tough regular-season finale with a commanding victory over Xavier in the Big East tournament quarterfinals. The Huskies, sitting as the second seed with a 28-4 record, are gearing up for another big test against 11th-seeded Georgetown in the semifinals.

The stakes are high as the winner advances to Saturday's championship game, facing either top-seeded St. John's or fourth-seeded Seton Hall.

UConn, ranked sixth nationally, had a rough outing last weekend, shooting just 35.6% from the field and a woeful 3 of 24 from beyond the arc in a 68-62 loss to Marquette. But after a reflective film session with head coach Dan Hurley, the Huskies stormed back with a 93-68 dismantling of Xavier.

This marks UConn's sixth consecutive trip to the tournament semifinals since rejoining the conference in the 2020-21 season. Hurley praised his team's resilience, saying, "I was really impressed with the energy level. There was no hangover from that last performance."

Key performances came from Solo Ball, Tarris Reed Jr., and Alex Karaban. Ball, who had struggled in his last five regular-season games, bounced back with 19 points, hitting four of UConn's 12 three-pointers.

"It's a new season," Ball said. "You've got to erase the past and trust your work."

Reed is on a roll with four straight double-doubles, notching 17 points and 14 rebounds to help UConn dominate the boards 40-28. Karaban, after a quiet game against Marquette, contributed 15 points to kick off his tournament play.

Georgetown, meanwhile, is making its first semifinal appearance since a surprising run to the title in 2021. The Hoyas have turned things around with three straight wins after a seven-game losing streak. They defeated sixth-seeded DePaul 63-56 and followed up with a 78-64 victory over third-seeded Villanova.

Sophomore center Julius Halaifonua was pivotal, recording his first career double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds, helping Georgetown out-rebound Villanova 46-25.

Georgetown coach Ed Cooley acknowledged the challenge ahead, saying, "We're going to play one of the best teams in America. Danny has done an incredible job with UConn. We're excited to be here and ready to give it our all."

In their regular-season matchups, UConn narrowly edged Georgetown by a combined six points. Reed and Ball were key contributors in those victories, while Halaifonua had limited impact.

As these two teams prepare to clash at Madison Square Garden, fans can expect an electrifying showdown. Will UConn continue its dominant run, or can Georgetown pull off another upset? The stage is set for an unforgettable night of college basketball.
