UConn Michigan State Set For Fresh Showdown

UConn men's basketball is set for a compelling preseason showdown against Michigan State, highlighting an expanded exhibition schedule that promises high-profile matchups and strategic challenges.

In a move that promises to keep college basketball fans on their toes, the UConn men's basketball team is set to face Michigan State once more this October. This matchup, part of a home-and-home exhibition series, will take place in East Lansing, Michigan, echoing last fall’s clash at PeoplesBank Arena. It's all part of the Huskies' preparation for the 2026-27 season, with the NCAA Division Basketball Oversight Committee proposing an increase in exhibition games from two to three.

Last preseason, UConn squared off against Boston College at Mohegan Sun Arena and then took on Michigan State in Hartford. If the proposal goes through, fans can expect similar matchups, with games at Mohegan Sun, Hartford, and an away game at Michigan State.

The upcoming season also sees an increase in non-conference games, jumping from 11 to 12. UConn's schedule is already shaping up to be a thrilling ride, with a home game against Kansas and a road game at Arizona slated for November 18. Both games conclude home-and-home series with these powerhouse programs.

UConn will also finish a two-game series with Illinois, having previously triumphed at Madison Square Garden. The rematch will take place at Chicago's United Center in December, shifting from its traditional Thanksgiving weekend slot.

The Huskies are on the hunt for more high-profile non-conference matchups to complement their schedule. This past season, they faced six high-major teams, including Kansas, Arizona, and Texas, alongside five lower-tier opponents. The additional non-league game raises the question: will UConn opt for another high-major challenge or balance it out with a low-major?

One thing is clear: UConn is steering clear of mid-majors like Yale, Vermont, or Rhode Island. The potential impact on their NET ranking and other metrics makes these matchups too risky for a program with high aspirations. As the Huskies gear up for another exciting season, fans can expect a blend of fierce competition and strategic scheduling.
