To clinch a national championship, a team needs skill and a dash of luck. For the Huskies, the latter seems to be in their favor even before the tournament begins.
With the 2026 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament bracket set to be unveiled this Sunday, the University of Connecticut is already in a promising position. Sporting a 27-4 record heading into the Big East Tournament, the Huskies are poised for a top seed, with a shot at a No. 1 if they clinch the tournament title at Madison Square Garden.
Regardless of the Big East outcome, Dan Hurley's squad is a formidable contender for the national championship. Having secured two of the last three titles and six overall, their blend of seasoned veterans like Alex Karaban, Tarris Reed Jr., Silas Demary, and Solo Ball, alongside the youthful spark of Braylon Mullins, gives them a balanced attack both in the post and on the perimeter.
But there's more than just talent on their side-luck is playing a role too.
While no one wishes to benefit from another team's setbacks, it's an inevitable part of the game. Two potential opponents for UConn are facing significant hurdles that could tilt the odds in the Huskies' favor.
Duke
The Blue Devils, reigning regular-season champions of the ACC, are eyeing a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. A potential matchup with Connecticut might not occur until the Elite Eight or Final Four.
However, they might have to face the Huskies without guard Caleb Foster, who sustained a foot fracture in the regular season finale. Foster, a key player with 30 starts this season, averages 8.5 points and 3.6 assists per game.
His absence would be a notable blow for Jon Scheyer's team.
North Carolina
The Tar Heels, seeded fourth in the ACC Tournament, could meet UConn in the Sweet 16 or Elite Eight. If they do, they'll be without their standout freshman, Caleb Wilson, sidelined for the season with a broken thumb. Wilson, projected as a top-five NBA Draft pick, leaves a significant void, which could be advantageous for any team facing North Carolina.
UConn kicks off its Big East Tournament on Thursday, taking on the winner of the Marquette vs. Xavier matchup.
The stage is set for an exciting tournament, and the Huskies are ready to make their mark.
