The UConn Huskies continue to make history, extending their undefeated streak to 30-0 with a commanding win over Georgetown. Thursday night's game was a testament to their dominance, especially in the second quarter, where they left the Hoyas reeling.
Georgetown started strong, hitting four 3-pointers and keeping pace with the Huskies, trailing by just one point at the end of the first quarter. But UConn, in true form, turned up the heat in the second quarter.
They launched into two 11-0 runs, outscoring Georgetown 27-5, and secured a hefty 48-25 lead by halftime. The final score of 84-52 at PeoplesBank Arena in Hartford, Conn., was a clear reflection of their prowess.
UConn’s stars shone brightly, with Azzi Fudd scoring 13 of her 24 points in the first quarter alone. Sarah Strong added 11 of her 13 points in the second quarter, marking her 43rd consecutive game with double-digit points, inching closer to Maya Moore’s record.
Defensively, the Huskies were relentless. After Georgetown shot 46.2% in the first quarter, UConn clamped down, holding them to just 14.3% shooting in the second. The Huskies forced 14 turnovers in the first half, converting them into 16 points, and showcased their defensive skills with eight steals and three blocks.
Even with a substantial lead, UConn didn’t ease up, outscoring Georgetown 22-13 in the third quarter. Fudd and Strong took a well-deserved rest in the fourth, allowing the reserves to take over.
This victory marked the end of the regular season at home for the Huskies, who will host the first and second rounds of the Women’s NCAA Tournament. Fudd, in her final season, expressed gratitude for the unwavering support of the UConn fans, who have been a constant source of motivation.
Fudd’s performance was stellar, shooting 9-of-19 from the field and 6-of-13 from beyond the arc, along with five rebounds, four assists, and four steals. Her season stats are impressive, nearing the elite 50/40/90 shooting club.
As the Huskies eye their final regular season game against St. John’s at Madison Square Garden, they stand on the brink of another perfect season. With six perfect seasons and 12 national championships under their belt, including last year’s title, the Huskies are a force to be reckoned with.
Ashlynn Shade, Kayleigh Heckel, and Blanca Quinonez also contributed significantly to the win, while Georgetown’s Summer Davis and Khadee Hession put up a valiant effort.
The Huskies' journey continues as they aim for perfection, and with performances like these, they’re certainly a team to watch.
