UConn Huskies Aim for NCAA Glory Against No. 15 Furman Today

UConn gears up for their NCAA Tournament opener against a formidable Furman, learning vital lessons from past challenges.

Philadelphia Showdown: UConn Gears Up for March Madness

The UConn Huskies are back in Philadelphia, and this time, the stakes are higher than ever. Xfinity Mobile Arena, now decked out in March Madness regalia, sets the stage for the Huskies' NCAA Tournament journey. Just four weeks ago, UConn triumphed over Villanova here, but now, it's all about chasing that elusive championship.

For Alex Karaban, a seasoned March Madness participant, the tournament offers a unique thrill. "March Madness is a special event," Karaban shared.

"You want to give it your all and learn from past games. If we don't bring our best, this group won't have another shot together."

UConn's quest for a third national title in four years kicks off against the No. 15 seed Furman at 10 p.m. on Friday.

Silas Demary Jr., the Huskies' pivotal point guard, knows the dance well, having faced Gonzaga last year with Georgia. Now donning the UConn jersey, he feels a different vibe.

"Here, winning is the standard," Demary noted, as he recovers from a minor ankle sprain. "It's not pressure; it's a privilege.

Wearing this jersey in March Madness is pure joy."

Demary is optimistic about his recovery, stating, "I'm doing everything to get back to 100%."

Coach Dan Hurley remains cautious, listing Demary as "questionable" for the game. Jaylin Stewart, dealing with knee inflammation, also practiced with compression gear and is in a similar status.

The Huskies are not underestimating Furman, a team with a knack for upsets, as seen in their 2023 victory over Virginia. Furman, coming off a Southern Conference Tournament win, boasts a 22-12 record and ranks impressively in height and 2-point field goal percentage.

"The SoCon is underrated," Hurley remarked. "Furman as a 15-seed surprised me.

Watching their games, you see a tough league with great players and an excellent coach. We need to be at our best."

Historically, No. 2 seeds hold a strong record in the NCAA Tournament. However, recent years have seen a few surprises, with three No. 2 seeds falling to No. 15s in the last five years.

UConn's own legacy as a No. 2 seed includes a national championship run in 2004 and several deep tournament runs. As they prepare to face Furman, the Huskies aim to add another chapter to their storied history.
