UConn Football Welcomes Dynamic Coaching Additions to Boost the Team

UConn Football bolsters its coaching lineup with a strategic blend of seasoned and emerging talent.

In a significant move for UConn's football program, head coach Jason Candle has bolstered his staff with three key additions. Joining the Huskies are defensive line coach Joe Schaefer, former Power 4 cornerback Sevyn Banks in a recruiting analyst/player development role, and ex-college quarterback Brady Lichtenberg as an offensive analyst.

Joe Schaefer brings a wealth of experience to the table. With a solid track record at big programs, Schaefer recently served at Syracuse, where he coached defensive backs and played a pivotal role in the development of All-ACC selection Clarence Lewis.

Despite a challenging season that led to his departure, Schaefer's previous roles include coaching linebackers at Texas A&M, serving as defensive coordinator at Youngstown State and John Carroll, and working as a recruiting coordinator at Iowa State. His journey began as a linebacker at Bowling Green, and he also boasts a state championship win as the head coach at Benedictine High School in Cleveland.

Sevyn Banks, a former four-star recruit, adds a fresh perspective to the Huskies. His playing career spanned Ohio State and LSU, where he made 36 appearances for the Buckeyes before transferring to LSU for an additional season.

Unfortunately, an injury in 2022 cut his playing days short, but Banks transitioned smoothly into coaching and scouting. He most recently served as the defensive coordinator at Orange Park High School in Florida and completed an internship in football operations with the New York Jets.

Brady Lichtenberg, an Ohio native, connects well with Candle, who previously coached in Lichtenberg’s hometown at Toledo. Lichtenberg opted for Cincinnati over Toledo, where he spent four seasons as a backup quarterback, amassing 411 yards and four touchdowns. His insights as an offensive analyst will be invaluable for UConn's strategic planning.

Schaefer steps in for LaTroy Lewis, who recently departed to join the Atlanta Falcons. This trio of hires marks an exciting new chapter for UConn as they aim to enhance their program with a blend of seasoned expertise and fresh talent.
