UConn men's basketball fans might find themselves doing a double-take next time they're cruising through Waterbury. A new billboard has popped up, and it’s not exactly what Huskies supporters would hope to see.
In a city that once proudly displayed a billboard featuring UConn alum and current Portland Trail Blazers star Donovan Clingan, there's now a nod to St. John’s.
Yes, you read that right-St. John’s, the same team that handed UConn a 72-52 defeat to clinch the Big East tournament championship, is now being celebrated in the heart of Connecticut.
This billboard, owned by OUTFRONT Media based in New York, highlights St. John’s back-to-back Big East championships. The Red Storm snagged their latest title at Madison Square Garden on March 14, leaving UConn fans with a bitter taste.
The digital display boldly proclaims "2025-26 BIG EAST CHAMPIONS" in striking black text, framed by the phrase "BACK 2 BACK CHAMPS" in larger gray lettering, all set against a vibrant red background.
Chris Antonucci, a UConn fan and 2014 graduate, took to social media to express his dismay. He shared a snapshot of the billboard with a caption that captured his disbelief: “Seen in Waterbury.
I can’t believe Connecticut allowed this billboard to appear in our state. @GovNedLamont.”
It’s a bold move by St. John’s, planting their flag right in the heart of Husky territory. For UConn fans, it’s a reminder of a rivalry that continues to heat up.
