Silas Demary Jr. came to UConn looking to make an impact beyond the court, and he’s bringing that same mindset to Hartford this month.
The Huskies senior point guard, who has long been active in giving back, is using his Silas Demary Jr. Foundation to run a back-to-school drive in the area.
The annual event has already made a difference for kids in his hometown of Raleigh, N.C., and it is set to be held in Hartford for the first time on Saturday, Aug. 22.
That drive will take place at the Mark Twain House on Farmington Ave. from 9 a.m. to noon, with donations of school supplies going to kids in need.
The effort got an added boost when Hartford Athletic announced it will team up with the foundation for a Back-to-School Bash during its home match on Saturday, Aug. 15. The club said it will collect supplies including notebooks, No. 2 pencils, folders, water bottles, colored pencils and more, with a goal of filling 500 backpacks.

Hartford’s game that night is also being billed as the team’s “Dead Head Night,” with a live band, Stealhead, set to perform before the match. The event will also include custom merch, tie-dying and more.
Hartford will face Miami FC at 7 p.m.
