Joe Fagnano picked up a little more breathing room in Baltimore on Thursday.
The former UConn quarterback, who signed a three-year deal with the Ravens earlier this offseason, already had a strong path toward a roster spot. Then the Ravens trimmed the competition by waiving former Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavila.
Both players arrived as undrafted free agents, but Fagnano’s contract always gave him the edge. Still, every name removed from the quarterback room matters once training camp and the preseason get here, and this move helps his case.
Fagnano’s college résumé is a long one. He spent seven seasons in college from 2019-25, using redshirt seasons and COVID exemptions to stretch out his career. He played four years at Maine before spending three at UConn, where he became the starter in 2024 and 2025.
His final season with the Huskies was a productive one. Fagnano completed 69 percent of his passes for 3,448 yards, with 28 touchdowns and only one interception. That performance produced a passer rating of 161.0.
UConn finished the regular season 9-3 and earned a trip to the Fenway Bowl, where it fell to Army. Fagnano did not play in that game, and the Huskies ended the year at 9-4.
For Baltimore, the appeal goes beyond the contract. Fagnano brings seven years of college experience and the kind of age that can matter if a quarterback is forced into action.
The Ravens have seen Lamar Jackson miss time before, including four games in 2025 because of injury, one game in 2023, and multiple games in both 2021 and 2022. That leaves open the possibility that Fagnano could eventually see the field in 2026.
There’s also the style fit to consider. Baltimore’s offense leans heavily on Jackson’s scrambling and playmaking ability, while Fagnano’s game at UConn was much more grounded. Over three seasons with the Huskies, he had 93 credited rushing attempts for 223 yards, averaging 2.4 yards per rush and 9.3 yards per game.
Fagnano is not alone in the Ravens quarterback room. Tyler Huntley and Skylar Thompson are still there alongside Jackson.
Back at UConn, the quarterback picture is unsettled heading into the season. Tennessee transfer Jake Merklinger appears to have the inside track, but Kalieb Osborne, who followed new head coach Jason Candle from Toledo, is also in the mix.
