Ja’Lynn Polk’s NFL story appears to be ending almost as soon as it began, and the Patriots are left staring at a draft miss that never got the chance to breathe.
According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the New Orleans Saints have placed the former New England wide receiver on the reserve/retired list. Polk had been trying to win a depth job in New Orleans, but he missed the Saints’ last two training camp practices for personal reasons before Sunday’s news broke. Rapoport also noted that Polk is walking away at 24, just barely three months after his 24th birthday.
It is a brutal turn for a player the Patriots once invested heavily in. Polk was taken with the 37th overall pick in the 2024 draft, but his lone season in New England never really got off the ground.
He played 436 total offensive snaps, all as a rookie with the Patriots, and finished with 12 catches, 87 yards, two touchdowns and two drops. Those numbers do not tell the whole story, though they do underline how little margin for error he had.
Polk entered the league already carrying shoulder issues from his Washington Huskies days, and those problems followed him into the pros. He was drafted under the Jerod Mayo regime, which turned out to be a one-and-done, and later dealt with another twist when Mike Vrabel traded him in 2025 while Polk was still on season-ending injured reserve.
The Patriots did get something back in the deal with New Orleans, receiving a 2027 sixth-round pick while sending Polk and a 2028 seventh-rounder to the Saints. But that kind of return does little to soften the reality in Foxboro.
Polk was never in an easy setup. New England’s offense was a mess under Mayo and former offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt, with then-rookie quarterback Drake Maye often under siege. The Patriots finished 31st in total offense and 30th in scoring, and Polk was trying to find his footing in the middle of all that chaos.
That makes the what-if part unavoidable. Polk had more than 1,000 yards and double-digit touchdowns in his final college season, and respected draft analyst Dane Brugler of The Athletic had him pegged as a late-second-, early-third-round talent. He has been mentioned alongside receivers drafted around his slot, including Ladd McConkey of the Chargers and Adonai Mitchell, who was originally taken No. 52 overall by the Colts.
But the Patriots’ rebuilding mess, Polk’s shoulder injury in 2025, and the arrival of a Vrabel regime eager to reshape the roster left him in a nearly impossible spot. He never settled in, never found a groove, and now his pro career may be over before it really had a chance to start.
