In the world of college basketball, Todd Golden's Florida Gators are riding high, and they’re not looking to slow down anytime soon. With a national championship already under his belt and 100 wins racked up faster than most, Golden has guided the Gators to an impressive 11-game winning streak as they charge into the postseason.
Securing a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament is the next step in their journey, and a victory in this week’s SEC Tournament could seal the deal. “We’re always looking for that edge, no matter how small,” Golden remarked. “A top seed gives us a slightly better shot, and we’re all in to make it happen.”
With a record of 25-6, Florida has positioned itself well. UConn’s recent stumble against Marquette has opened the door for the Gators to claim a top seed, with Duke, Arizona, and Michigan already locked in.
Golden is clear about his strategy: “Win, and we’re in control. Slip up, and we’re leaving things to chance. We’ve got the opportunity in our hands, and we’re not about to let it slip.”
The Gators are no strangers to success, having clinched consecutive SEC tournament titles. They’re set to take on the winner of Missouri vs. Kentucky this Friday in Nashville, aiming for another net-cutting celebration.
Reflecting on their recent triumph over Arkansas, reserve guard Urban Klavzar shared, “We’ve talked about it. We’ve got to do it three more times. It’s what drives us.”
Florida will kick off their NCAA Tournament run on March 20 at Tampa’s Amalie Arena, and they’re peaking at just the right time. “We’re hitting our stride now, just like last season,” said All-SEC forward Thomas Haugh. “We’ve got to keep our focus.”
The Gators have been dominant, boasting an average winning margin of 23 points during their current streak. This is a far cry from their 5-4 start, where losses to powerhouses like Duke and Arizona highlighted their early struggles.
The transformation has been fueled by the emergence of transfer guards Boogie Fland and Xaivian Lee. Fland’s defensive prowess and Lee’s dynamic play in the open court have been crucial, with both ranking high in assist-to-turnover ratios within the SEC. Meanwhile, Klavzar has become a reliable scoring option off the bench, shooting an impressive .439 from beyond the arc in conference play.
Florida’s front court remains a force, with Haugh averaging 17.2 points per game and Alex Condon contributing 15.1 points and 6.8 rebounds. Rueben Chinyelu’s dominance on the boards, leading the nation with 11.7 rebounds per game, adds another layer of depth.
With a deep and confident roster, the Gators are set for a memorable postseason. Their eyes are firmly on leaving Nashville with a title and a coveted No. 1 seed. As Golden puts it, “We’re looking to add as many feathers to our cap this year as we can.”
