Coach K Reacts To Mullins Stunning Duke Buzzer Beater

UConn's Braylon Mullins etched his name in NCAA history with a dramatic buzzer-beater against Duke, earning praise from legendary coach Mike Krzyzewski and highlighting a fierce rivalry rekindled.

Thirty-six years ago, Duke's legendary coach Mike Krzyzewski dialed up a play for Christian Laettner, who clinched a memorable game-winner against UConn in the Elite Eight. Fast forward to Sunday evening, and it was UConn's turn to deliver a dramatic finish. Freshman Braylon Mullins nailed an improbable buzzer-beater, lifting UConn over Duke 73-72, serving a cold dish of revenge to Coach K’s former program.

In a classy move, Krzyzewski congratulated Mullins on the Pat McAfee Show, setting aside his 42-year Duke legacy to acknowledge the freshman's moment of glory. He also praised senior Alex Karaban for his pivotal pass that set up Mullins' historic shot.

UConn and Duke have a storied rivalry in March Madness, with their five encounters over the last fifty years being nail-biters, decided by an average of just four points. Notably, UConn pulled off one of the biggest upsets in NCAA Tournament history in 1999, and again stunned Duke in 2004 with a 12-0 run to close the national semifinal.

Sunday’s matchup seemed unlikely to join the ranks of these classics early on, as UConn trailed by 19 points in the first half. Duke's star brothers, Cameron and Cayden Boozer, were on fire, combining for 27 points.

Yet, Coach Dan Hurley’s unwavering belief in his team shone through, inspiring a comeback for the ages. Mullins, reflecting on the game, praised Hurley’s relentless drive and mentorship, crediting him as a role model and the standard-bearer for the team.

This thrilling victory is another chapter in the rich tapestry of UConn-Duke encounters, showcasing the drama and unpredictability that makes March Madness truly special.
