NBA legend Charles Barkley has voiced his belief in Hurley’s coaching prowess, suggesting it could be the key to leveling the playing field. Barkley likens Hurley to some of the greats in college basketball, such as Rick Pitino, John Calipari, and Tom Izzo. “I think Coach Hurley is one of the best in-game coaches,” Barkley stated, noting that this could set the stage for a potential upset over Duke.
Duke’s roster is stacked, with talents like Cameron and Cayden Boozer, sharpshooters Isaiah Evans and Caleb Foster, and the versatile Patrick Ngongba, who’s returning to form after an injury. Under Jon Scheyer’s guidance, Duke excels in the fundamentals, ranking high in both offensive and defensive rebounding and maintaining a stingy defense that limits opponents’ trips to the free-throw line.
UConn, on the other hand, stumbled slightly at the end of their Big East campaign, with losses to Creighton and Marquette, followed by a tough defeat to St. John’s in the conference tournament.
Yet, Hurley’s knack for March success shone through with a decisive Sweet 16 win over Michigan State, bolstering his impressive 16-1 record over the last four NCAA Tournaments. His strategic offensive schemes have become a nightmare for coaches with limited prep time.
Duke’s Jon Scheyer acknowledged Hurley’s tactical acumen, saying, “The way they run called actions, they’re able to manipulate where they’re getting what they want most times. It’s impossible to cover every play in a one-day prep.”
