Andrew Hurley Stuns Fans With Bold Career Decision Beyond Coaching

Andrew Hurley carves his own path in college basketball, shifting focus from coaching to a potential GM role, inspired by the sport's evolving dynamics.

In the ever-evolving world of college basketball, Andrew Hurley, son of UConn's head coach Dan Hurley, is carving out his path with a keen eye on the future. While many might expect him to follow in his father's coaching footsteps, Andrew has different plans.

Currently a graduate manager for the Huskies, Hurley is more intrigued by the strategic side of the game, eyeing a potential future as a general manager. This role, which has gained prominence with the rise of name, image, and likeness (NIL) deals and transfer portals, seems to align more with his aspirations.

“I’m young, and things change every day,” Hurley shared before a recent practice. His passion for staying within the basketball realm is clear, but he acknowledges the shifting landscape of the sport. “The whole business has changed, and that’s why I’m drawn to the front office.”

Having graduated from UConn after a successful stint as a walk-on, where he boasted an impressive 43-0 record in games he appeared in, Hurley is now set to earn his MBA. While an assistant coaching role might be on the horizon, the allure of a GM position is strong.

“Tom Moore has taught me a lot,” Hurley noted about UConn’s current GM. “From handling schedules to understanding NIL dynamics, I’ve learned the intricacies of putting a team together.”

For now, Hurley is fully engaged in his role as a grad manager, contributing to UConn's pursuit of another national title. One of his key responsibilities is managing replay reviews during games. Armed with a tablet, he assesses crucial calls to advise his father on whether to challenge them.

“It’s a high-pressure task,” Hurley admitted. “You have to be 100-percent sure before recommending a challenge, especially since losing one can cost you later in the game.”

Despite the stress, Hurley thrives in this environment, demonstrating a knack for making the right calls. He was flawless in his challenges this season until a controversial call against Xavier. Reflecting on that moment, he said, “It’s still baffling, but aside from that, my record’s been solid.”

As for his father’s approval? “He’s tough to please,” Andrew said with a grin. “He’d like me to be more decisive, but you have to be certain to avoid wasting a timeout.”

Andrew Hurley’s journey in basketball is just beginning, and with his analytical mind and passion for the sport, he’s poised to make a significant impact, whether on the sidelines or in the front office.
