As Alex Karaban wraps up his illustrious career with UConn men's basketball, he's leaving a legacy that will be hard to match. With more games started and wins than anyone in the program's storied history, Karaban has become a fixture under coach Dan Hurley. Over the years, he's absorbed Hurley's tactical acumen and even picked up some of his quirks.
Karaban, speaking to reporters, expressed a desire to coach after his playing days are over. But it's not just strategy he's learned from Hurley-there's a bit of superstition in the mix, too. During a mic'd up segment on ESPN's College GameDay, Karaban shared a glimpse into these rituals.
"Coach Hurley is all about the underwear, but for me, it's the socks," Karaban revealed. "I make sure to keep the same pair, though I do wash them, of course.
Socks are my thing. I might even try the M&M routine to see how it goes."
This M&M reference nods to Hurley's unique pre-game ritual, where he eats exactly eight M&M's, careful to avoid any in the colors of the opposing team.
Karaban's sock superstition seemed to work wonders during his final game at Gampel Pavilion, as he led all scorers with 15 points and nailed three 3-pointers by halftime. Meanwhile, Hurley's Huskies had a tougher time against Seton Hall, perhaps a sign that a few blue M&M's slipped through the cracks.
During a four-minute spot on College GameDay, Karaban, amidst a chorus of boos from Gators fans at the Florida-hosted broadcast, spoke earnestly about Hurley's influence.
"Coach Hurley is truly unique. He pushed me every day, taking me out of my comfort zone.
It's about discovering how much more you can push yourself daily. That's a lesson I'll carry with me.
And loyalty-he's shown me just how crucial it is in today's world."
Karaban's journey with UConn has been one of growth, both on and off the court, and as he steps into the Huskies of Honor, his impact will be felt for years to come.
