The No. 15 Oregon Ducks get a week to breathe after a statement win, but the calendar is already pointing them toward another ranked test.
Oregon’s first Big Ten home game has been locked in for Oct. 10 against the No. 23 UCLA Bruins at Autzen Stadium, and the league finally delivered the missing details Monday.
The matchup is set for 12:30 p.m. PT on CBS.
That gives the Ducks a clear next checkpoint after their emotional 41-27 win over No. 18 USC, a result that helped steady a season that opened with plenty of turbulence.
Oregon had already survived a close call in Week 1 and then stumbled in Stillwater, Oklahoma, leaving its College Football Playoff outlook in a tricky spot. The latest AP Poll only sharpens the picture.
Entering Week 5, Oregon is the only ranked team that has already faced three opponents currently in the AP Top 25. The Ducks beat then-No.
22 Boise State 34-27, lost 39-31 to then-No. 19 Oklahoma State, and knocked off USC, which slid to No. 18 after the loss.
UCLA, meanwhile, is on a bye and figures to stay put at No. 23 before coming to Eugene. If that holds, Oregon will have played four AP Top 25 teams in five games.
That makes the Bruins game more than just another date on the schedule. A strong win at home would give the Ducks another chance to climb.
The matchup also brings a familiar face to Eugene in UCLA coach Bob Chesney. Dan Lanning and Oregon saw Chesney last December in the CFP, when he was still leading JMU. Now Chesney brings an undefeated 4-0 Bruins team into Autzen.
The bye arrives at a useful time for Oregon, which has spent the last two weeks cleaning up the rough edges from its shaky start. The Ducks responded to the Sept. 12 road loss with a pair of wins, including the 84-0 blowout of FCS Portland and the victory over USC.
Against the Trojans, the run game finally showed real life. Jordon Davison ran for 66 yards, including a long of 45, and scored a touchdown.
Dierre Hill Jr. added 63 rushing yards and two scores.
There was also a boost at tight end with Jamari Johnson back in the mix. He had missed the previous two games with an injury, then came back against USC and finished with seven catches for 119 yards.
Still, the biggest concern coming out of that win involved quarterback Dante Moore. He took a heavy hit in the second quarter on a play that resulted in a targeting penalty, and the scene turned serious quickly as the training staff came onto the field before Moore was taken off on a stretcher and transported to Los Angeles General Medical Center.
On Sunday, Oregon said Moore had suffered a concussion.
“Fortunately, his MRI and CT scans came back clean, and he did not suffer any additional injuries,” Lanning said in the statement. “Every concussion is different and we are going to move forward with an abundance of caution to ensure we make the best decisions for Dante and his future.”
CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz reported that Moore is expected back at some point and will go through the concussion protocol, though the timeline remains unclear.
In Moore’s absence, Dylan Raiola took over and delivered. He completed 19 of 25 passes for 289 yards and two touchdowns, and one of those scores came shortly after Moore’s injury when Raiola hit Evan Stewart in the end zone. After the touchdown, Raiola and Stewart each flashed a five with their hands in Moore’s honor.
With the bye week here, Oregon gets a chance to reset. And if Moore isn’t ready for UCLA, Ducks fans may get their first start from Raiola in an Oregon uniform when the Bruins arrive.
