UCLA’s women’s basketball program is already working ahead in a big way, and the latest name on the board is one of the most coveted young guards in the country.
Kaleena Smith, the No. 1 player in the class of 2028 according to 247Sports, has scheduled an official visit to UCLA for October 30. The 5-6 point guard is drawing heavy attention across the country and has lined up multiple trips, including Washington on July 31 and USC on October 23, the week before she gets to Westwood.
Smith has also set visits with Baylor on August 28, Oklahoma on September 4, Georgia on September 11, Tennessee on September 25, and Arizona State on October 9.
UCLA’s pursuit of Smith comes as Cori Close continues to reshape a roster that just finished the best season in program history. The Bruins went 28-1 in the regular season, won the Big Ten Tournament title, and then captured the program’s first national championship with a win over South Carolina.
That title run was powered by six seniors - Lauren Betts, Kiki Rice, Gabriela Jaquez, Gianna Kneepkens, Angela Dugalic, and Charlisse Leger-Walker - all of whom have now moved on to the WNBA.
With that core gone, Close attacked the transfer portal and rebuilt around Sienna Betts, who just completed her true freshman season. Addy Brown, Donovyn Hunter, Elina Aarnisalo, KK Bransford, and Bonnie Deas all arrived to help keep UCLA in the championship mix.
This cycle, though, the Bruins did not land a high school recruit, and the program’s lone commit eventually decommitted and ended up with Texas. Close also did not pursue anyone in the 2026 class, turning her focus instead to the 2027 group and now to elite talent in 2028.
Smith fits the mold of a guard UCLA has not really had under Close. Brandon Clay, 247Sports’ women’s basketball director of scouting, praised her ability to score and create, while also noting how deep her shooting range goes.
"Her ability to pick her spots to score or distribute does not go unnoticed by her teammates. Smith does a good job of keeping them involved throughout the game.
That's not the easiest task for a point guard who scores the basketball the way that Smith does. She has legitimate shooting range out past the 25-foot mark.”
If UCLA were to land her, pairing Smith with Betts would give the Bruins a freshman-senior combination that would immediately grab attention across women’s college basketball.
