There’s also a lot to like about how UCLA has managed its backfield. Wayne Knight is sixth in the country in rushing yards, yet he’s only 77th in total carries. That’s a pretty clear sign this has been a committee approach, and it means each of the three backs in the rotation is still fresh and healthy.
That kind of low mileage can matter later in the season, when legs start to go and the grind gets heavier. For UCLA, it’s a built-in advantage worth watching.
Then there’s Mizell, whose return gave Bruins fans a glimpse of what he can add once he’s fully available. The senior wide receiver had missed nearly every quarter of the season because of injuries, but he was active against Maryland and made the most of his lone catch. He took a short pass 83 yards for a touchdown and stretched UCLA’s lead even further.
It’s tough to draw sweeping conclusions from one reception, but the play was enough to show what kind of spark he can provide. If he keeps making plays like that, Nico Iamaleava should have no trouble getting him the ball.
The bye week should only help Mizell’s injury situation, and UCLA will be hoping he can come out of it ready to go against Oregon in Week 6.
