UCLA enters Week 8 with the kind of matchup most people expect it to handle, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty to watch. The Bruins have been sharp enough this season to climb to No. 9 in the latest Top 25 AP Poll, and now the pressure is on to back that ranking up with a clean, convincing showing against Michigan State.
The first place to look is the ground game. UCLA’s running attack, led by Wayne Knight, has been one of the biggest strengths of the season through the Bruins’ first five wins, but it got bottled up last week against Wisconsin.
That was a rough night for the run game, and it stands out because of how effective it had been before then. Michigan State, though, does not bring a run defense that looks nearly as intimidating, which gives Knight and the rest of the Bruins a real chance to get rolling again.
For UCLA, the offense needs to function in every phase, and the run game is where it starts.
The passing game is another subplot worth tracking. Against Wisconsin, UCLA put up a season high in total attempts through the air, and that alone makes this week interesting.
The increased volume said something about Bob Chesney’s trust in his quarterback, and the production out of that passing game should keep feeding that confidence. As Dieffenbach and the Bruins receivers continue getting more comfortable with one another, these next two home games could be valuable in speeding that growth along.
Then there’s the bigger picture around the ranking itself. UCLA’s spot in the top 10 has not exactly ended the debate.
Because the Bruins have not yet faced many of the teams near the top of the conference, some fans have labeled them overrated or undeserving of the number next to their name. Michigan State doesn’t offer a marquee résumé win, but it does offer something just as important right now: a chance to look like a top-10 team.
If UCLA slips against a Spartans team that appears to be limping in, the criticism will only get louder. If the Bruins handle business at home and do it convincingly, they can quiet some of that noise in a hurry.

UCLAs Turnaround Suddenly Looks Real For One Huge Reason
A year after finishing 3-9, UCLAs climb has become impossible to ignore. The Bruins have surged into the top 10 this season, piling up wins against ranked opponents and other winning teams, and the turnaround is now showing up in the kind of places that matter most when the conversation shifts from progress to payoff.
CBS Sports has taken notice, projecting UCLA to make the 2026 College Football Playoff. The bracket outlook alone says plenty about how far the Bruins have come, with the kind of path that would immediately test whether this run is a real breakthrough or just the start of one. [Read more 🡒]
UCLA Just Got An Early Glimpse Of Two Difference Makers
UCLAs exhibition win over California Baptist offered an early look at a group that already appears to have a few players capable of tilting games in different ways. The Bruins rolled to a 100-53 victory, and the most encouraging part for Mick Cronins team was how comfortably they looked on both ends of the floor, with the offense moving well and the defense setting the tone from the start.
Eric Dailey Jr. gave UCLA a steady scoring presence, while freshman Nikola Kusturica flashed the kind of disruptive defense that can change possessions in a hurry. It was only an exhibition, of course, but performances like that tend to stick with a coaching staff, especially when they come from players who could carve out real roles as the season unfolds. UCLAs Week 8 Injury Picture Could Test This Winning Streak
UCLAs first availability report for its Week 8 matchup with Michigan State offered an early look at how much depth the Bruins may need to lean on to keep their momentum going. Eight players were listed as unavailable, including Jordan Davis and defensive backs Rodrick Pleasant and Tao Johnson, leaving another test for a roster that has already had to manage injuries while trying to extend its winning streak.
The encouraging side for UCLA is that Michigan State is dealing with an even longer unavailable list, one that includes starting quarterback Alessio Milivojevic and running back Jaziun Patterson. Even so, the Bruins still have to replace important pieces on both sides of the ball, and the next wave of backups will be part of the story if UCLA is going to keep the good run going in East Lansing.
