UCLA Gymnastics Aims for Big Ten Glory in High-Stakes Showdown

UCLA's gymnastics team, ranked No. 5, prepares to defend their Big Ten title at the Big Four Meet, emphasizing consistency and confidence as key to their ongoing success.

With each passing week, the UCLA gymnastics team continues to solidify its status as one of the nation's elite. Riding a wave of six consecutive victories, the fifth-ranked Bruins are gearing up for a significant challenge: a quad meet against three formidable Big Ten opponents.

Friday's Big Four Meet at Pauley Pavilion will see UCLA face off against No. 18 Iowa, No.

19 Ohio State, and No. 25 Maryland.

The stakes are high, as a top-two finish would secure a second straight regular-season conference championship for the Bruins. A clean sweep would also mean an undefeated conference season-an impressive feat by any measure.

The task won't be easy, but the Bruins' recent form suggests they're up for the challenge. Fresh off a victory at Illinois, where they posted their highest road score of the year, the Bruins are riding high. Led by two-time Olympian Jordan Chiles, they outperformed the competition with a 197.675-195.475 win, setting new benchmarks along the way.

The team allowed only one opponent to claim an individual title. Senior standout Jordan Chiles dominated, winning vault with a 9.950, floor with a 9.975, and securing the all-around for the sixth consecutive meet with a 39.650. Fellow senior Ciena Alipio shone on beam, scoring a 9.950.

Head coach Janelle McDonald emphasized the importance of focusing on controllable factors. "We’re excited about the opportunity," McDonald stated. "Our goal is to continue what we've been doing all season-hitting great routines and building confidence as we head into the postseason."

Chiles has been a cornerstone of the Bruins' success, delivering perfect 10 routines for five consecutive weeks. Her dedication and positive influence extend beyond her scores, inspiring her teammates to elevate their performances.

The composition of a college gymnastics team is a blend of athletes from both Junior Olympic and elite backgrounds. Regardless of their past experiences, each gymnast starts anew every week, facing the same competitive pressures.

In her fourth season, McDonald is focused on guiding her athletes, particularly the freshmen, through the rigors of collegiate competition. "We’re heading into nine straight weeks of competition," she noted. "It’s about managing fatigue and ensuring our practice cadence prepares them to feel their best on meet day."

Friday's meet at Pauley Pavilion will also make history as the first collegiate gymnastics meet televised on FS1, adding another layer of excitement to an already thrilling event.
