“I think that we are capable of that complementary game of football, and that ultimately, this is a situation where our guys have to be able to step up and can't listen to any outside noise throughout the week…That defense did a really good job, especially in the secondary.”
The same pattern has shown up on the other side of the ball, too. When one phase has been questioned, UCLA has responded in the next game, and Chesney pointed to that growth as part of the bigger picture.
“Offensively, a couple weeks ago when we were all questioning that, right, they stepped up and did what they needed to do, and then special teams stepped up. So I just think that finally being able to play some complementary football and put ourselves in a situation where, you know, we defy the odds in so many different ways, maybe so to speak, and we learn from our mistakes the week before and grow. And that's really what we did.”
The result was the kind of showing UCLA fans have been waiting for: dominant, balanced, and clean across the board. Now the challenge is keeping that momentum intact through the bye week before the Bruins turn to their toughest test yet, a Week 6 ranked matchup against Oregon.
