UCLA’s first week of training camp has already started to sort out the Bruins’ early momentum, even if the view from practice has been limited. There’s enough coming out to get a feel for who is moving up and who may need more work as the season gets closer.
One name that appears to be on the rise is Matthews. Being one of the few returning receivers gives him a built-in edge, and that advantage seems to be showing up in practice.
He has reportedly looked more involved in the offense, and his familiarity with the program should have helped him enter camp with a head start. That said, with so many transfers and a new head coach in the mix, it’s hard to know how much that returner status really mattered for anyone.
At the same time, Malik Hartford has come up in conversations around the wide receiver group, but not in the same glowing way. With practice still mostly behind closed doors, it’s tough to pin down exactly who is having trouble and who is simply facing strong competition. Even so, based on the information available, Hartford looks like a player trending in the wrong direction.
Wayne Knight, though, has separated himself as one of the safest bets on the roster right now. He’s expected to be the engine of the offense, at least early on, and the reports around him have been consistently strong. That kind of steady buzz makes him one of the most reliable players on the UCLA field at the moment.
This isn’t a new development, either. Knight has already built a reputation in camp for exceeding expectations, and that trend doesn’t appear to be slowing down. The belief is clear enough that Sep. 5 should provide the next proof point.
Knight’s strong showing also raises a question for UCLA’s defensive front. It’s still hard to tell whether the unit is really struggling or whether Knight is just that difficult to handle, but the concern is there.
If the defense is getting exposed in practice, Bruins fans would rather believe this is iron sharpening iron. If not, there’s reason to worry about opposing run games finding success against UCLA this season.

Mick Cronin is once again pushing UCLA toward the kind of identity he believes travel well in March. The Bruins were solid enough last season to be above average on both ends, but Cronin made it clear that is not the bar in Westwood, where he wants this group to live in the top 10 nationally on offense and defense. It is the sort of standard that turns every practice, every rotation decision and every matchup into a test of whether this roster can match the coachs expectations.
The harder part, at least right now, is on the defensive end, where UCLA does not appear to have a player with the same kind of back-line insurance Adem Bona provided. Cronin sees that type of "mistake eraser" as a necessity if the Bruins are going to make a real postseason run, and finding out who can fill that role may end up shaping the season as much as any scoring answer. UCLAs Backfield Battle Could Finally Fix A Longstanding Problem
UCLA is heading into the season with a clear push to lean harder on the ground game under coach Bob Chesney, and the backfield looks like the part of the roster most likely to make that plan work. Transfer Wayne Knight joins a group that already includes returning backs Anthony Woods and Jaivian Thomas, giving the Bruins a deeper and more varied set of options than they have had in recent years.
For a program that has too often struggled to get much going on the ground, the chance to finally build a reliable rushing attack matters well beyond one position battle.
