Nico Iamaleava is walking into one of the biggest measuring sticks of his season on Saturday, and Oregon is set up to make it a rough one.
The No. 13 Ducks will host the UCLA quarterback on Oct. 10 in a matchup that gives Iamaleava a chance to keep building on his fast start and keep drawing attention from NFL Draft evaluators. UCLA has surged to a No. 21 ranking behind its 4-0 opening run, and Iamaleava has been at the center of it.
ESPN NFL insider and fantasy football analyst Field Yates is among those paying close attention. Speaking to Lorenzo Reyna of Oregon Ducks on SI, Yates said Iamaleava has shown enough to make people take notice, but also noted that Saturday brings a different level of challenge.
"A lot of talent there for Nico. He's a very athletic quarterback, his dual-threat ability shows.
But Saturday is a good test," Yates shared. "With Nico, there hasn't been a ton of high leverage tests for him."
Yates pointed back to one game that stands out when trying to gauge Iamaleava under real pressure: Tennessee’s trip to Columbus in Dec. 2024. That night, against eventual national champion Ohio State, the Volunteers were overwhelmed, and Iamaleava had a hard time getting anything going through the air.
"It's a College Football Playoff game in the cold of Columbus, and it felt like no one wanted to be there on the Tennessee side and Nico wasn't good enough," Yates recalled. "I think when you do quarterback evaluations, you have to have a sense for moments."
The numbers from that game tell the story. Iamaleava finished 14-of-31 for 104 yards and averaged just 3.4 yards per play. Ohio State’s defense, featuring Caleb Downs, Sonny Styles and Arvel Reese, forced him into making plays with his legs instead of his arm.
That’s the kind of pressure Oregon figures to bring again. Dan Lanning and defensive coordinator Chris Hampton will have a chance to attack Iamaleava with an aggressive approach, and the Ducks’ three-high safety shell look is part of what could make the picture cloudy for him.
Yates said those are the moments evaluators want to see from quarterbacks they’re trying to project.
"These quarterbacks have to have stretches of plays where you're like' that's when I knew this guy was a first round pick.' Nico has been looking for those kind of plays," Yates adds.
Oregon’s front gives the Ducks another edge. Edge rushers Teitum Tuioti and Matayo Uiagalelei have been effective at getting after quarterbacks, while defensive tackles A'Mauri Washington and Bear Alexander have helped wreck passing games, including most recently against USC and Jayden Maiava.
So while this road game offers Iamaleava a chance to keep his rise going, it also gives Oregon a shot to slow the momentum that has followed him into October.
Yates is watching, and so are plenty of NFL Draft scouts and evaluators. He’s also tied to Red Baron "Crunchtime" through the brand’s "Field Access promotion," which includes weekly one-on-one strategy sessions with Yates for fantasy players chasing a championship run.

UCLA Enters Oregon Test Healthier Than Expected With One Key Uncertainty
UCLA heads into Week 6 with a noticeably cleaner injury picture than it has carried into some of its recent matchups, a welcome development as the Bruins prepare for a difficult trip to Oregon. The initial report suggests the roster is in better shape overall, and that matters in a game where availability can tilt the margin quickly.
Oregons quarterback situation also adds another layer to the matchup, with Dante Moore ruled out and backup Dylan Raiola set to take over. For UCLA, the biggest uncertainty on the report is Tao Johnson, who is listed as questionable after missing three games, while Aidan Mizell looks ready to go, giving the Bruins at least a little more clarity as they sort through the final details before kickoff. Oregon Faces A Dangerous Home Test At The Worst Time
UCLA heads into its upcoming trip to Eugene with a chance to keep an undefeated season rolling and to chase a milestone that has eluded the program for two decades. The Bruins have not won there since 2004, and this meeting arrives with their ground game carrying much of the load against an Oregon defense that has generally done a good job keeping opponents from breaking through on the run.
Oregons quarterback situation adds another layer to a matchup that already felt high-stakes. Dante Moore will not play because of a concussion, so Dylan Raiola is set to start in his place, leaving the Ducks to adjust on short notice against a UCLA team that looks built to press that exact weakness. For the Bruins, it is the kind of road test that can tell them plenty about where this season is headed. [Read more 🡒]
Oregon Faces A Huge UCLA Test With Its QB Situation Still Unclear
Oregons trip to face UCLA comes with more than the usual Pac-12 intrigue, and the quarterback situation only adds another layer to a matchup that already looks difficult to sort out. ESPN analyst Greg McElroy leaned toward the Ducks, pointing to Dan Lannings defense as a reason for confidence, especially the way Oregon has handled the run and finished drives in the red zone.
From UCLAs side, there is still plenty to like in the ground game and in a turnover battle that has kept the Bruins competitive. But McElroy also flagged the same issues that have followed them at times this season, namely the passing game and penalties, while the Oregon quarterback picture remains cloudy after Dante Moores concussion and the questions surrounding Dylan Raiola against higher-level competition.
