Bruins Stumble Against Purdue in Big Ten Semis Without Key Players

Undermanned but unyielding, UCLA pushes Purdue to the limit in a thrilling Big Ten semifinal clash.

In a game that tested their resilience, UCLA faced an uphill battle right from the tip-off. Missing key player Tyler Bilodeau, the Bruins' challenge intensified when Donovan Dent exited the game with a calf injury just over halfway through the first half. Despite these setbacks, UCLA showed remarkable tenacity.

The game started with a spark from Skyy Clark, who nailed the opening jumper, but Purdue quickly responded with a 15-0 run. Lesser teams might have folded, but not these Bruins.

They rallied back with a 15-2 run, tying the game at 17-17 with just over seven minutes left in the half. Purdue, however, wasn't backing down either, extending their lead to nine points before UCLA trimmed it back to four, thanks to Trent Perry and Eric Freeney.

A buzzer-beating three from Purdue's Jack Benter sent the Bruins into halftime trailing by seven.

The second half was a battle of wills. Purdue stretched their lead to as much as 13, but UCLA refused to back down. With just over four minutes remaining, Trent Perry's jumper tied the game at 60, and Brandon Williams kept the tension high by tying it again shortly after.

Yet, a decisive 6-0 run by Purdue put the Bruins in a tough spot, trailing 68-62. Perry's free throws brought them within four, but that was as close as they would get. Purdue's steady hand at the line in the final moments secured their spot in the Big Ten Tournament Championship against Michigan.

Trent Perry led the charge for UCLA with 15 points, while Xavier Booker added 12. Eric Dailey Jr. notched a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, and Skyy Clark contributed 10 points. The absence of Donovan Dent, who left early with an injury, was felt, but the Bruins' effort was nothing short of commendable.
