The Big Ten acknowledged a missed officiating detail after Oregon’s last-ditch two-point try against UCLA on Saturday, when the Ducks had a chance to force a tie but came up short in a 17-15 loss.
UCLA’s defense carried the day, limiting Oregon’s offense for most of the game and helping the Bruins secure what the source described as the biggest win of the Bob Chesney era. The key controversy came in the final minutes, after Oregon scored a touchdown to pull within two. The Ducks went for the tying conversion and failed, but a facemask penalty on UCLA gave them a second shot.
That’s where the league says the mechanics went wrong. The ball was placed at the 1.5-yard line for Oregon’s next attempt, but according to the Big Ten, it should have been moved to the half-yard line - half the distance to the goal from the end of the first try.
“With 2:16 remaining in the fourth quarter of Saturday’s UCLA-Oregon game, Big Ten officials incorrectly officiated Oregon’s final two-point conversion attempt,” a statement from the conference read. “Following the first attempt that resulted in a personal foul penalty for a facemask on the UCLA defense, the ball was spotted for the second attempt half the distance to the goal from the original line of scrimmage of the first attempt.
Per rule, the ball should have been spotted half the distance to the goal from the end of the run of the first attempt. The Big Ten has been in contact with its officiating team from Saturday’s game regarding the error and will continue to emphasize consistent application of the playing rules.”
Oregon is now 3-2 and turns to Nebraska next on Oct. 17, with kickoff set for 3:30 p.m. ET.

UCLA Upset Oregon And A Celebrity Backer Cashed In Big
A UCLA upset already had enough juice on its own, but the Bruins 17-15 win at Oregon picked up an extra layer of attention when 50 Cent showed up in the aftermath with a celebration of his own. The rapper and producer posted on Instagram after the game, making clear he had backed the Bruins in a matchup that handed Oregon its second loss of the season and its first in Big Ten play at Autzen Stadium.
The bet story only added to the intrigue around a win that will travel well beyond Westwood, especially with Bob Chesney and his staff still trying to build momentum from it. 50 Cent had already made his interest in UCLA known publicly, and the timing of his support gave the result a little extra pop, turning a tense road victory into one of those college football outcomes that spills over far past the final whistle. Oregon Fans Have A New AP Poll Problem After USC's Statement Win
USCs statement win over Penn State is already stirring up the next AP Poll debate, and the ripple effects could reach well beyond the playoff picture. With Georgia handling Alabama and Texas falling to Oklahoma, the top of the rankings is in motion again, but USCs surge is the bigger storyline for teams tracking the middle of the bracket and the race for respect that comes with it.
For UCLA, the timing matters too. The Bruins are sitting in the mix after a strong road win at Oregon, and the updated poll is expected to reward that result by pushing them ahead of USC. It would be another small but meaningful marker in a season where every ranking shift can shape how the rest of the schedule is viewed, especially with USC still staring at a difficult stretch that includes Ohio State, Indiana and UCLA. Iowa's Rebound Just Changed How Michigan Fans See That Loss
Iowas latest showing offered a little context for a result that had looked damaging before the rest of the Big Ten settled in around it. The Hawkeyes leaned on a strong running game and got enough from the backup quarterback spot to keep momentum moving, which matters for Michigan because it softens the edge of that earlier loss and reminds everyone how tricky league road trips can be.
The ripple effects stretch beyond Ann Arbor, too, because UCLA and Oregon are both still part of a changing league picture shaped by what happened over the weekend. UCLAs defense was especially forceful in its win over Oregon, and the availability of key players will continue to matter as these teams move into another critical stretch of conference play.
