The Toronto Raptors’ preseason blowout of the New York Knicks on October 13 had a little bit of everything: a 148-98 rout, a 2-1 preseason record, and a loud homecoming at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto’s first look at Kawhi Leonard back in Raptors threads.
But buried in all that noise was a short burst from Trayce Jackson-Davis that might have made the loudest case of the night for a player trying to climb the depth chart.
Jackson-Davis logged roughly 10 minutes in Toronto’s 2026 preseason debut and didn’t waste a second. He finished 4-for-4 from the floor for nine points, added three rebounds, one steal and two blocks, and kept forcing the arena into another reaction every time he made a play.
The sequence that stood out most came late. Malachi Smith found him for a running slam over Pacome Dadiet that turned the building back up again.
On the next possession, Jackson-Davis met Jaden Akins at the rim for a block that drew a stunned reaction from the crowd and the Raptors’ bench - especially Scottie Barnes, haha. Then, with under 30 seconds left, Jackson-Davis blocked Akins again to close out a strong fourth-quarter stretch.
Yes, the Knicks were missing their starters. That matters. But so does the setting for a player like Jackson-Davis, because every minute on the floor is a chance to change how the team sees you.
Toronto acquired Jackson-Davis at the trade deadline, but he has played only sparingly since arriving and still hasn’t carved out a steady role. Even so, the Raptors brought him back for the coming season, and Darko Rajaković has already said they still have plans for the 26-year-old big man.
That makes these final preseason games matter even more. Toronto’s frontcourt depth is still thin, and the team is still sorting out how much trust to place in Jakob Poeltl and Kyle Anderson. Jackson-Davis offers something different: a burst of force, a jolt of energy, a style that can change the tone of a game in a hurry.
That’s where the pressure starts to build. Poeltl looks like a safe bet for the rotation despite the concerns that have followed him over the past year, while Anderson seems capable of landing the tenth spot or moving up in certain situations. Jackson-Davis, though, could complicate that picture if he keeps doing what he did against New York and uses the last two preseason games to keep making his case.
Toronto already has youthful frontcourt energy from Collin Murray-Boyles, and while Jackson-Davis is not CMB, he brings a similar kind of edge that separates him from veterans like Poeltl and Anderson. With the Knicks and Pistons still on deck, there’s a chance he gets another look as Coach Darko eases off the starters a bit more and gives the third-stringers one more shot to prove they belong.

Kawhi Sees A Raptors Identity That Could Be Brutal To Defend
Kawhi Leonards return to the Raptors is already changing the way the roster looks on paper, and not just because of what he brings as a scorer. Toronto has spent years leaning into versatility, and the presence of Scottie Barnes and Collin Murray-Boyles gives the team a defense that can switch, pressure and cover a lot of ground without having to reshape the whole lineup around one scheme.
For a team trying to build something sturdy for the 2026-27 season, that kind of length and flexibility can be a nightmare for opponents to sort out. The obvious question, as always with Leonard and several of Torontos key pieces, is health, because the idea of this identity is easy to picture while the challenge is keeping it intact long enough to matter. Darkos Early Message On This Raptors Rookie Really Stood Out
Allen Graves got his first taste of Raptors basketball in the preseason, and the early review came with the kind of encouragement Toronto likes to hear about a young player trying to carve out a role. In 15 minutes, the rookie showed enough activity to get noticed, finishing with 5 points, 3 rebounds and a steal while bringing the sort of defensive edge head coach Darko Rajakovic has been eager to see from a developmental piece.
Rajakovics praise centered on Graves effort and aggressiveness, even as the staff continues to evaluate how his speed and athleticism translate at this level. For a player seen as a long-term project with defensive upside and some promise as a three-point shooter, the first step is less about the box score than showing he can stay engaged and compete, and that part of the debut stood out. Ben Stiller Had The Perfect Caveat To RJ Barrett's Knicks Return
RJ Barretts return to New York always came with a little extra weight, and not just because he was facing the team that drafted him. Since the December 30, 2023 trade that sent him from the Knicks to the Raptors, the Toronto-born wing has settled in as a steady scoring presence for his hometown club, continuing to produce across the board and giving Raptors fans a familiar face to track whenever the schedule circles back to Madison Square Garden.
The Knicks have plenty of reason to feel good about the deal too, with OG Anunoby becoming a key piece in their climb to a long-awaited title. So when Barrett went back to New York, there was a built-in layer of intrigue from both sides of the trade, the kind of reunion that can turn a regular regular-season night into something a little more personal for everyone watching.
