The Toronto Raptors put on a show Friday night against the Phoenix Suns, snapping a slump with style. But Sunday’s matchup against the Eastern Conference-leading Detroit Pistons was a different beast. The question on everyone’s mind was whether the Raptors could string together wins against top-tier teams like Detroit, the best in the East.
Throughout the season, the Raptors have often secured victories against teams lower in the standings. It was understandable when they hovered around the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds. However, Detroit has consistently held the top spot, a position Toronto has been chasing all season without quite catching up.
Detroit entered Sunday’s game with an impressive 48-18 record, showcasing the fruits of their recent rebuild. The last encounter between these two teams ended with Detroit cruising to a blowout win.
Given that history, many expected a repeat performance. Yet, Toronto's spirited win over Phoenix hinted at the possibility of carrying that momentum forward.
“Against a team like that, you need to set a tone,” said Raptors coach Darko, emphasizing the importance of establishing dominance early against a powerhouse like the Pistons.
The Pistons made a late push, narrowing a 10-point deficit to just 5 in the closing minutes. The Raptors have found themselves in clutch situations often this season, but facing the top team in the conference was a true test. A win here would signify more than just another victory; it would highlight the growth and resilience of this young team.
Toronto managed to stay competitive in the first half despite an early scare when Scottie Barnes headed to the locker room. Fortunately, Barnes returned to help the Raptors maintain a 64-59 lead at halftime.
The third quarter saw the Raptors extend their lead beyond 10 points, thanks to impressive ball movement and dominance on the boards. Jakob Poeltl, who had a quieter game on Friday, shone brightly with a double-double by the third quarter.
As the fourth quarter unfolded, the Raptors needed to close out strong-a challenge they’ve faced in recent weeks. Scottie Barnes, known for his clutch performances, stepped up once more. Could the Raptors withstand the pressure from a formidable team like Detroit?
In a standout performance, the Raptors, led by Brandon Ingram, held off the Pistons, clinching a 119-108 victory. Ingram’s 34 points were crucial, while Barnes’ defensive prowess thwarted Detroit’s final surge.
“I’m a broken record talking about Scottie and his impact on defence,” Darko remarked, noting Barnes’ milestone of surpassing 100 blocks on the season and his candidacy for Defensive Player of the Year.
Darko praised the team’s relentless competitive spirit, saying, “We just kept fighting the entire game.”
The victory was a team effort, with RJ Barrett contributing 27 points, Poeltl finishing with a 21-point, 18-rebound double-double, and Barnes adding a 14-point, 10-rebound double-double.
This win sets a strong foundation as the Raptors prepare for their final West Coast road trip of the season. The confidence gained from this weekend’s performances will be invaluable as Toronto continues its push towards a true playoff run.
