In a crucial matchup on Friday, the Raptors secured a vital win against New Orleans, bolstering their push for a guaranteed playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. With Immanuel Quickley sidelined, head coach Darko Rajakovic made a strategic move by starting Ja’Kobe Walter over Jamal Shead.
This shift allowed Scottie Barnes to take charge as the primary offensive catalyst, and he delivered a stellar performance. Barnes racked up 23 points on an impressive 10-of-14 shooting, alongside 12 assists, six rebounds, three blocks, and two steals in 36 minutes of play.
Rajakovic praised Barnes, saying, "He’s a pass-first player who thrives on moving and finding his teammates in transition. His size and athletic ability let him play over the top of the defense."
Second-year wing Ja’Kobe Walter also made his mark with 18 points and four assists over 34 minutes, showcasing his potential on the court.
As for Quickley, his battle with plantar fasciitis in his right foot remains a concern. He’s set to miss his fourth consecutive game against Orlando.
Rajakovic explained, "The only way to fully heal is rest, but Quickley is working through it. We need to manage his recovery and get him off his feet for now."
In other team updates, rookie big man Collin Murray-Boyles was a late scratch for Sunday’s game due to lower back spasms, despite being initially expected to play.
Meanwhile, RJ Barrett's status is uncertain for the Magic game after sustaining a left shoulder injury during Friday’s win. Barrett, who played through the tightness, attributed the injury to a collision with his former Duke teammate Zion Williamson.
"I was just trying to box him out," Barrett said. "When he jumped, he took my arm up with him.
He’s a force, man."
The Raptors’ ability to adapt and overcome these challenges will be key as they continue their playoff push.
