The Toronto Raptors opened their road trip with a 131-125 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers inside Crypto.com Arena, a game that slipped away despite a late push that made things interesting down the stretch.
Toronto spent much of the night chasing, but the Raptors kept hanging around and even got the margin down to five points with less than a minute left. That rally, though, never quite turned into a full comeback, and the Lakers finished the job to hand Toronto its third loss of the season.
The biggest problem for the Raptors showed up before the game even tipped. Jakob Poeltl was ruled out just prior to tip-off because of bursitis in his shoulder, and Toronto had to start Trayce Jackson-Davis in his place.
Jackson-Davis logged only 9 minutes and finished with 5 points, while the Raptors dealt with a size mismatch that never really went away. The absence of a true centre was a clear issue throughout the night.
How long Poeltl will be sidelined remains unclear, but Toronto is going to have to sort out that spot sooner rather than later.
On the other end, Luka Doncic was every bit the force the Lakers have come to expect early this season. He poured in 45 points on 12 of 23 shooting, hit 8 of 12 from deep, and was perfect at the line, making all 13 of his free throws.
He also led Los Angeles with 15 rebounds. Against a player like that, the margin for error is tiny, and the Raptors paid for every lapse.
Still, Toronto did have a few encouraging defensive moments. The final score was ugly, but the Raptors were active with their hands all night, coming away with 14 steals and forcing 22 turnovers.
They just couldn’t turn enough of those takeaways into points, which kept the Lakers in control. Even so, the turnover pressure offered something for Toronto to build on.
The Raptors are back in action tomorrow night against the Los Angeles Clippers at Intuit Dome in Englewood. Tip-off is set for 10 p.m. ET, with the game available on TSN or via the TSN Plus app.

Raptors Suddenly Have A Jakob Poeltl Problem Bigger Than His Play
Jakob Poeltls early-season role has become one of the more uncomfortable issues hanging over the Raptors, and it is not just about what he has done on the floor. The starting centers play has drawn scrutiny, but the bigger conversation around him is starting to drift into roster construction and cap math, which is usually a sign a team has more than one problem on its hands.
Around the league, the suggested fixes have ranged from trimming his minutes to leaning more on other bigs, including Trayce Jackson-Davis, or even exploring a veteran addition at center. The most extreme idea in the mix is a move that would open financial flexibility by waiving and stretching Poeltls contract, which shows how quickly a performance question can turn into a front-office dilemma when a team is trying to balance the present with what comes next. Raptors Have An Offensive Problem Fans Cant Ignore
The Raptors loss to the Lakers was another reminder that their offense can look stuck when the game slows down. Scottie Barnes did his part with 29 points, but Toronto had trouble generating clean looks in the half-court, and the gaps showed up once the pace dropped and the Lakers were able to settle in defensively.
Immanuel Quickley and RJ Barrett were less effective as creators in those moments, which only sharpened the concern around a group still trying to find reliable answers without Kawhi Leonard in the lineup. With Leonard out and no clear return timetable, Toronto is left leaning harder on improvisation than structure, and that is becoming harder to ignore as the losses pile up. [Read more 🡒]
