The Raptors may already have one major swing on the board with Kawhi Leonard, but the trade chatter around Toronto is hardly finished. Another potential move has surfaced, this one built around Sacramento Kings center Domantas Sabonis and a four-team shuffle that would shake up several rosters at once.
Bleacher Report’s Dan Favale floated a deal that would send Sabonis to Toronto, RJ Barrett to the Charlotte Hornets and Jakob Poeltl to the Kings. In the same framework, the Hornets would move Pat Connaughton to the Los Angeles Clippers, while Royce O'Neale and Tidjane Salaun would also land in Sacramento.
For Toronto, the pitch starts with the center spot. Poeltl’s health is the first issue, and it’s a big one.
He played only 46 games last season because of a back injury that bothered him for much of the year. He is heading into his age-31 season, and there’s no clean guarantee that the back problem gets better from here.
His contract is another layer to the equation: he is owed three more seasons after this one at $84 million.
That kind of money makes him a tough piece to keep if the Raptors decide they want more flexibility down the line. Barrett, meanwhile, brings a different kind of decision. He is set to hit free agency after the season, so Toronto has to weigh whether a new deal makes sense or whether moving him now would be the better way to extract value.
Sabonis is the name that jumps off the page, and he would clearly be an upgrade over Poeltl on paper. But the fit comes with real risk. He played only 19 games last season because of injuries, and he’s also around 30 years old, which adds another layer of concern about how his body holds up over the next few seasons.
There’s also the Raptors’ own view of Barrett to consider. The team is more likely to want an extension for the 26-year-old than to ship him out, and they reportedly see him as a strong fit alongside Scottie Barnes and Leonard as they push toward a championship run.
Even with all that, Toronto may not be eager to make another major move this close to the start of the season. A more likely time to act could come at the deadline, once the team has a clearer read on what it has and where the gaps really are.
The bottom line is simple: the Raptors believe they’re close. But this particular deal asks them to take on plenty of risk without delivering enough of a payoff. Sabonis is a former All-Star, sure, but swapping out Poeltl and Barrett for him alone doesn’t move Toronto far enough forward to justify the gamble.

Raptors Fans Now Face A Franchise Shift With Huge Questions Ahead
Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment is entering a new era after Rogers Communications agreed to buy the remaining stake and take full control of the company, a move announced July 6 and still subject to league approvals. For Raptors fans, the change goes well beyond the balance sheet. MLSE sits at the center of the franchises business and basketball operations, so any shift in ownership inevitably raises questions about how the club will be run and what kind of stability or new direction might follow.
Larry Tanenbaums looming exit adds another layer to the transition. He has long been one of the most visible figures in the Raptors ownership picture, and his departure from his roles with the team, MLSE and the NBA board of governors would mark the end of an important chapter in the franchises history. The sale may be complete in principle, but the practical impact on the Raptors is only beginning to come into focus. [Read more 🡒]

Raptors Face A Tough RJ Barrett Decision That Could Shape The Roster
RJ Barretts future has quietly become one of the more important roster questions facing Toronto as he heads into the final year of his current contract. The sides are open to discussing an extension, but those conversations have not started yet, and that alone says plenty about where things stand for a team already trying to balance a crowded payroll and a few other major financial priorities.
Barrett is expected to be looking for a raise, which makes the timing tricky for the Raptors as they sort through what kind of long-term money they can realistically commit. A deal like the one Mikal Bridges landed with the Knicks offers a useful benchmark, but Toronto still has to decide how far it wants to go before its cap situation forces the issue. [Read more 🡒]
