The Raptors 905 are carving out a unique legacy in the G League, and it’s not just because they’re the only team north of the border. Since their inception in 2015, they’ve fostered a “family vibe” that resonates both on and off the court.
This was on full display during the unveiling of their first-ever practice facility in Mississauga, Ontario. Veteran guard Jarkel Joiner captured the essence perfectly: “They care about you as more than a basketball player.”
Teammate Tyreke Key echoed this sentiment, highlighting the team’s emphasis on togetherness-a rarity in the G League. This spirit extends beyond the hardwood, deeply embedding itself in the Mississauga community over the past decade.
Courtney Charles, the vice president of basketball and franchise operations, has been a driving force behind this ethos from day one. His approach is simple yet profound: “Our success is everyone else’s success.”
This philosophy has not only shaped the team but also earned them the Community Assist award for two consecutive seasons. And they’re aiming for a “three-peat,” as Charles confidently stated.
The Raptors 905’s impact isn’t just about community engagement. They’ve also been a springboard for talent, with 27 players advancing to the NBA, contributing to the Raptors’ 2019 championship run. Recently, three players secured two-way contracts in just five days, underscoring the team’s developmental prowess.
Saturday’s unveiling of the 16,000 square-foot facility marked a milestone for the organization. It’s the first NBA-sized regulation court built exclusively for a G League team, capable of accommodating 360 people. The facility includes state-of-the-art locker rooms, training spaces, and a players’ lounge, thanks to a $12.8 million partnership between the Raptors 905, Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, and the City of Mississauga.
Mississauga’s mayor, Carolyn Parrish, emphasized the facility’s significance: “This new gym is a big win for us, benefiting both Raptors 905 and local residents.” The gym will host basketball camps and community events, reinforcing the team’s community-first approach.
G League president Shareef Abdur-Rahim praised the facility as a landmark achievement for the league and the community. The grand opening featured a basketball clinic involving local groups, spreading the excitement and spirit of the Raptors 905.
Head coach Drew Jones III couldn’t hide his excitement about the new facility. Leading the team to a historic 16-0 start and a strong playoff position, Jones sees the facility as a testament to the organization’s commitment to player development and excellence.
The Raptors 905 continue to set the standard in the G League, not just in terms of basketball success but also in community impact, embodying a model that others may aspire to emulate.
