Ochai Agbaji is looking to make a splash with the Brooklyn Nets, and he's off to a promising start. After being moved from the Toronto Raptors at the trade deadline, Agbaji has a golden opportunity to rediscover his game in Brooklyn as the season progresses.
In his debut with extended minutes for the Nets, Agbaji was a standout performer despite the team's 112-84 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers. The 25-year-old guard delivered 13 points, grabbed three rebounds, dished out three assists, and added a block, shooting an efficient 5-of-8 from the field and 3-of-6 from beyond the arc.
Agbaji's performance was a bright spot, finishing with a team-best minus-four in 28 minutes on the court.
Head coach Jordi Fernandez had high praise for Agbaji, noting, “He did a great job. He was ready to shoot and still has some adjustments to make with spacing and defensive concepts, but he was physically and mentally prepared. It was great to see.”
Back in the 2024-25 season, Agbaji had his best year, averaging 10.4 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 1.5 assists with impressive shooting splits. However, this season, he struggled with his shot in Toronto, hitting just 12-of-65 from three-point range, which led to his reduced role.
Despite being part of a salary dump, Agbaji's arrival in Brooklyn came with optimism. Standing 6-foot-5 with a 6-foot-10 wingspan, his athletic prowess is evident, making him a potential defensive asset.
Thursday's game was a testament to his athleticism and potential impact. If Agbaji can build on this positive shooting performance, he could secure a more significant role with the team.
Reflecting on his performance, Agbaji shared, “It felt good to see the ball go in and get into a rhythm with my teammates. This was the first time I got extended minutes to really find my form, and I'm excited about what we can achieve. The unselfish style of play here fits me well.”
As Agbaji approaches free agency with the expiration of his rookie contract this summer, he's one of several players on the Nets' roster, including Ziaire Williams, Jalen Wilson, and Josh Minott, who are eager to prove their worth and secure new deals.
