The Toronto Raptors have made a savvy move to bolster their guard lineup by signing Markelle Fultz to a 10-day contract. Fultz, the former top pick in the 2017 NBA Draft, is looking to make his mark once again in the league.
At 27, Fultz hasn't seen NBA action this season but has shown flashes of his potential with the Raptors 905 in the G League. Over five games, he's averaged 9.4 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 6.2 assists. These numbers suggest that Fultz still has the playmaking skills that made him a coveted prospect.
This signing marks Fultz's fourth team in nine seasons. After a standout college career at the University of Washington, he was drafted first overall by the Philadelphia 76ers.
Injuries plagued his early years, limiting him to just 33 games over two seasons. In 2019, the Orlando Magic acquired him, hoping for a resurgence.
Fultz found some stability in Orlando, playing 72 games in his first season and averaging 12.7 points. Unfortunately, injuries struck again, including a torn ACL in 2021, which slowed his progress. Last season, Fultz had a brief stint with the Sacramento Kings, where he struggled to find his footing, appearing in only 21 games with limited minutes.
Throughout his career, Fultz has shown glimpses of his talent. Over 255 NBA games, he's averaged 10.4 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 4.4 assists, shooting 47% from the field. However, his three-point shooting remains a challenge at just 28%.
Now, Fultz has an opportunity to contribute to a Raptors team in need of guard depth. With Immanuel Quickley as the primary point guard, the team has been searching for reliable backup options. Jamal Shead has struggled recently, failing to score in double digits since late February.
The Raptors, currently fifth in the Eastern Conference with a 39-31 record, are in a tight race with the Atlanta Hawks and Philadelphia 76ers. As they prepare to face the Utah Jazz, Toronto hopes Fultz can provide the spark they need. If he can tap into his potential, Fultz could be a key piece in the Raptors' playoff push.
