The Raptors turned Toronto into a reunion weekend for Kyle Lowry, and the guest list read like a roll call of eras.
Saturday’s Night of 7 Gala was built to celebrate the most important player in franchise history, honoring Lowry’s nine seasons in Toronto and the trail he left behind. DeMar DeRozan, his longtime backcourt partner and closest on-court ally, was there as expected. So were a bunch of other familiar faces from different chapters of Raptors history.
From the early-2010s groups, Terrence Ross showed up, along with Amir Johnson, Jamaal Magloire and Chuck Hayes. The championship team from 2018-19 was represented too, with Fred VanVleet, Danny Green, Pascal Siakam and OG Anunoby all in attendance. Current Raptors Scottie Barnes and Immanuel Quickley also came out to salute Lowry.
A few names were missing from the celebration, including Serge Ibaka, Marc Gasol, Norman Powell, Chris Boucher and Kawhi Leonard. Ibaka, though, was part of the weekend in another way: he attended Lowry’s invitational golf tournament on Friday at TPC Toronto. Ibaka told reporters he doesn’t actually golf - he makes art.
Kevin Love also spent the whole Lowry weekend around Toronto, teasing Raptors fans, stirring up free agent chatter and attending the gala with his wife, Vancouver-born model Kate Bock. Love never played for the Raptors, but he and Lowry were teammates for parts of two seasons with the Miami Heat.
Lowry’s connection to the franchise was already locked in back in July, when he became the first player to sign a one-day contract and retire with the Raptors. His No. 7 jersey is scheduled to go into the rafters at Scotiabank Arena on Jan. 10, when Toronto hosts his hometown team, the Philadelphia 76ers.
