Kawhi Leonard is the swing factor in Toronto’s push to separate itself in a crowded Eastern Conference.
That’s the basic truth driving all the noise around the Raptors right now. Leonard remains one of the league’s most decisive players when he’s on the floor, even with the baggage that comes with him at 35 and the long-running load-management reputation. He’s still a two-way force with two championships on his résumé, and when he was originally in Toronto, he looked like the best basketball player on the planet.
The timing only sharpens the buzz. Leonard is coming off one of his strongest statistical seasons, a year that brought another All-Star nod and a place on the All-NBA Second Team.
He’s a polarizing figure, no doubt, but the upside is obvious: he changes the ceiling of whatever team he’s on. Around Toronto, the expectation has been that he’ll be back in a Raptors uniform when the 2026-27 season opens.
That possibility matters even more because the East is turning into a full-on scramble. The Knicks are the defending champs.
Philadelphia has made huge splashes. Cleveland has tinkered but still sits in the mix.
Miami is taking a major swing on the Giannis experiment, while Boston, Atlanta, Orlando, Detroit, and Indiana are all part of the conversation too.
For Toronto, the Leonard move is being viewed as the kind of addition that can lift the Raptors into the top tier of that race. Some around the league are even putting them in the same bracket as New York and Philadelphia.
You can make a case for Miami’s aggressive pursuit versus Toronto’s Leonard move, but the Raptors are still widely expected to have the edge in the regular season. What happens once the playoff race tightens up is another question.
There’s still plenty on the roster beyond Leonard. Scottie Barnes remains the centerpiece of the future and the player Raptors fans are eager to watch keep climbing.
Immanuel Quickley and RJ Barrett are still in the picture, and there’s been real attention on what they can become if they remain part of the long-term plan. Toronto’s younger group - including Ja’Kobe Walter, Jamal Shead, and especially Collin Murray-Boyles - also has a lot of eyes on it as the team’s next wave.
But the Leonard piece is the one that changes the temperature. In the proposed deal between the Clippers and Raptors, Toronto is effectively swapping Brandon Ingram’s services for Leonard, a clear upgrade if it happens.
If it doesn’t, and the Raptors simply run it back with the same group from 2025-26 aside from losing Mamu, signing SloMo, and adding Allen Graves, the outlook looks a lot less exciting. Even with Leonard expected back, the roster still has obvious holes and concerns.
That’s why the Leonard discussion has taken over. On a recent Game Theory Podcast episode, Sam Vecenie and Bryce Simon talked through the East and where Miami sits after adding Klay Thompson, and both made clear how they see Toronto with Leonard in the fold.
Simon put it bluntly: “ Toronto’s awesome with Kawhi.” Vecenie followed with: “ I’d probably have Toronto ahead for what it’s worth.
But I’m very high on the Kawhi experience with Toronto.”
That line - “Kawhi experience” - captures the whole thing. Toronto is counting on Leonard to be the difference between a roster with questions and a team with real traction in a brutal conference.
The Raptors have other pieces to develop, and they’ll need growth from Barnes, Murray-Boyles, and the rest. But Leonard is the piece that turns the conversation from hopeful to dangerous.
For now, Toronto is waiting on the move that could define everything.
