Kawhi Leonard Scandal Nailed With Major Twist

Despite the glitzy Marvel-themed proposal for Kawhi Leonard, the Clippers find themselves under scrutiny from the NBA, causing potential trade disruptions.

The NBA’s investigation into the Clippers’ relationship with Aspiration keeps turning up odd details, and the latest one is hard to miss: Kawhi Leonard was apparently the centerpiece of a Marvel-style superhero pitch.

According to NBA reporter Mike Vorkunov of The Athletic, documents tied to the league’s probe included a proposed marketing campaign that would have cast Leonard as a superhero for Aspiration’s partnership with the Clippers. Vorkunov posted images of the concept Tuesday on Bluesky, showing artwork built around Leonard in that role.

It’s the newest twist in a story that has already reached far beyond a standard league inquiry. Last week, NBA insider Shams Charania reported that Leonard’s blockbuster trade back to the Toronto Raptors had been put on hold while the NBA continues its review of the Clippers’ business dealings with Aspiration.

The probe traces back to reporting from journalist Pablo Torre on Pablo Torre Finds Out. Torre cited internal documents alleging that Clippers owner Steve Ballmer invested $50 million into Aspiration through his personal LLC in September 2021. In that same month, the Clippers announced a reported $300 million sponsorship agreement with Aspiration, which became the first founding partner of the Intuit Dome.

Torre’s reporting also pointed to additional documents that allegedly showed a $28 million endorsement agreement for Leonard, something investigators are now examining as part of the league’s broader look at the arrangement. The reporting has fueled allegations that the sponsorship setup may have been used to get around the NBA’s salary cap.

After Charania reported the Raptors-Clippers trade delay, the Clippers issued a statement saying they are cooperating with the league and believe the process will ultimately clear them.

“We continue to cooperate fully with the NBA's review and remain confident the facts will demonstrate that our organization has acted appropriately throughout this process.”

The team also stressed that the league has not drawn any conclusions yet.

“The NBA's review remains ongoing, and we will refrain from further comment until that process is complete.”

Raptors Just Took Another Hit In Their Backup Center Search

Torontos search for a backup center has taken another turn, and the picture behind Jakob Poeltl still looks unsettled heading into the new season. With the veteran option no longer in the mix, the Raptors are left trying to piece together a workable answer for a spot that matters every night, especially for a team that wants to stay competitive without overtaxing its starting big.

Collin Murray-Boyles is the likeliest fallback if Toronto does not add anyone else, but that comes with obvious questions about whether he can handle the job full time. The Raptors have also taken a look at summer league bigs Nate Bittle and Jamarion Sharp as longer-range possibilities, though neither is viewed as someone who would step in right away, which leaves the front office with a decision it still has not solved. Scottie Barnes May Finally Be Headed For The Role Fans Want

Scottie Barnes has already shown enough all-around talent to make Torontos future feel promising, but the next step for him may be less about polish and more about force. The Raptors have long wanted a young cornerstone who can bend a defense, take over possessions and bring a little more edge to the scoring end, and Barnes has the kind of skill set that could eventually fit that bill if his role keeps expanding.

The appeal is obvious for a team that still wants to think big: Barnes developing into a more aggressive offensive presence could give Toronto another path to contention, the same way Pascal Siakams rise helped reshape the franchises ceiling during the 2019 title run. If Barnes keeps trending that way, the Raptors would not just be banking on talent, but on a player who could help stretch their championship timeline in a meaningful way. [Read more 🡒]

Raptors Get One More Vegas Test As Allen Graves Draws Spotlight

Toronto gets one more Las Vegas look Friday against Miami, with the Raptors trying to keep their Summer League run moving in the right direction after back-to-back wins. The final game of the trip carries a little extra weight, too, because a victory would push Toronto to 3-1 and keep its semifinal hopes alive in a field where every result matters.

Allen Graves has been at the center of the Raptors early buzz, showing why Toronto made him a first-round pick and why his Summer League minutes have drawn attention. He opened with a big night, then came back to earth in his last outing, which makes this matchup another useful checkpoint for a roster that has looked sharper as the week has gone on and now gets one more chance to make a statement before leaving Vegas.
