Kawhi Leonard is back in Toronto, and the move has already been framed as something bigger than basketball.
The trade with the Los Angeles Clippers was completed earlier this week, sending Leonard back to the Raptors, the team he helped win the 2019 NBA championship with. It also gives him another shot to deepen his place in franchise history.
“Him going back to Toronto is a complete legacy play for Kawhi,” NBA insider Shams Charania said.
“There were teams, including Detroit and Minnesota, and others that had interest in trading for him and wanted to give him an extension, but he made a decision because he had one year left on his deal. He essentially wanted to weed out where he wanted to play and be.
This is a legacy play for Kawhi Leonard. There's no doubt about it.”
Leonard had options. Detroit and Minnesota were among the teams interested, and both presented their own appeal.
The Pistons won 60 games last year and finished as the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference, while the Timberwolves have reached two Western Conference Finals in the last three years. Still, Leonard chose Toronto.
That choice says plenty about what drew him back. Familiarity with the city and organization likely mattered, and so did the Raptors’ current roster and their chance to contend. Leonard is returning to a place where he already knows the landscape, and where the fit makes sense on paper.
But if this is mainly about Leonard chasing his own legacy, Toronto can’t afford to let that become the whole story.
The Raptors need him to fit into what Darko Rajakovic has spent the last three years building. Leonard may well be their best player, but the real challenge is getting him to embrace the group rather than stand apart from it. That was part of the equation when he first arrived in 2018, and it has to be part of it again now.
Toronto’s championship outlook is better with Leonard in the fold. He changes the conversation, and it wouldn’t be a stretch to call the Raptors a real contender with him on the roster. He raises the ceiling and gives them a legitimate chance.
Still, the lesson is the same as ever: championships are won by teams that are fully aligned. Leonard will need to buy in more now than he did the first time around. If his focus leans too heavily toward personal legacy instead of collective purpose, the Raptors could wind up beating themselves in a crowded Eastern Conference.
