Josh Giddey Set for Comeback as Bulls Face Raptors Tonight

In a pivotal return for the struggling Bulls, Josh Giddey's comeback against the Raptors could shift the tides after a challenging February slump.

Josh Giddey is set to make his return Thursday night against the Toronto Raptors after being sidelined for nearly three weeks with a re-aggravated left hamstring strain. The Chicago Bulls have listed Giddey as probable, and following a full practice on Wednesday, it looks like fans will finally see him back in action.

This is a crucial development for a Bulls team that stumbled into the All-Star break on a six-game losing streak, including a tough 124-105 loss to the Boston Celtics. With February yet to yield a victory for Chicago, having their primary playmaker back could be the spark they need.

Giddey has been out since January 28 against the Indiana Pacers, when he re-aggravated the hamstring injury he initially suffered on December 29 versus the Minnesota Timberwolves. After missing 11 games, he returned on January 22 in Minnesota, leading Chicago to a 120-115 win. However, the hamstring issues resurfaced after just four games.

Before his injury, Giddey was putting up impressive numbers:

  • 18.6 points per game
  • 8.6 rebounds per game
  • 8.8 assists per game

Despite missing out on his first All-Star selection, these near triple-double averages highlight his importance to Chicago’s offensive flow.

Expect Giddey to have a minutes restriction. In his previous return, he averaged 26.8 minutes over four games. The Bulls are likely to keep him under 30 minutes in his first game back, considering the recurring nature of his injury.

A New Backcourt Dynamic

Giddey’s return comes amid changes in Chicago’s guard rotation. The Bulls have traded Coby White, Ayo Dosunmu, and Dalen Terry, while adding Anfernee Simons, Collin Sexton, Jaden Ivey, and Rob Dillingham.

This new lineup could mean a faster pace and improved spacing. The challenge will be for Giddey to quickly reestablish himself as the crucial link in the system.

Other Bulls on the Mend

Giddey isn’t the only Bull eyeing a return. Tre Jones (left hamstring strain) is also probable and could play for the first time since January 22. Jalen Smith (strained right calf) is expected to resume his role at center after missing three games.

Zach Collins remains out with a sprained right first toe, having been sidelined since December 27. He’s still in a walking boot, and while a re-evaluation is on the horizon, there’s no set timetable for his return.

Noa Essengue is out for the season following shoulder surgery in early December. Two-way players Yuki Kawamura and Mac McClung are unavailable due to contract status.

Meanwhile, Toronto is in relatively good shape, listing only Sandro Mamukelashvili (rib contusion) and Collin Murray-Boyles as probable.

Giddey’s return is pivotal for Chicago, bringing much-needed stability, shot creation, and composure. After weeks of anticipation, the Bulls are poised to welcome back their floor general.
