Gradey Dick’s path to a rookie extension has hit a wall, and the latest league-wide reality check makes that even clearer.
Dick, a 2023 first-round pick, is eligible for an extension right now. But his chances are bleak, and not just because of where he stands with Toronto. On the September 8 episode of the Zach Lowe Show, Zach Lowe put Dick among a long list of first-rounders from that class who have almost no shot at landing one.
“The following players have borderline zero chance to definitely zero chance from the 30-person first round of 2023 at signing an extension: Jarace Walker, Taylor Hendricks, Jett Howard, Gradey Dick, Jordan Hawkins, who was traded today, Kobe Bufkin, Jalen Hood-Schifino,…, Cam Whitmore-waived again this week-Noah Clowney, Dariq Whitehead, Kris Murray, O-Max Prosper, Marcus Sasser, Ben Sheppard, Nick Smith Jr., Julian Strawther, Kobe Brown,” Zach Lowe said on the September 8 episode of the Zach Lowe Show.
For Dick, the situation with the Raptors already looks grim. He dropped out of the rotation last season, and Toronto is actively trying to move him to the LA Clippers as part of the deal that is expected to bring Kawhi Leonard back to Toronto soon. If that trade happens, it does not appear to help Dick’s extension outlook much, if at all.
The Clippers’ backcourt and wing group is already crowded, and Dick would still have to prove he can actually help before anything about his long-term future changes. That challenge comes with an added layer for LA, which is still dealing with the aftermath of the salary-cap circumvention scandal that cost the franchise five first-round picks.
There’s a broader lesson here for Toronto, too. Dick’s situation is another ugly reminder of how the Raptors’ lottery swing in 2023 has aged. They used a premium pick on him, and the return has not matched the investment.
That said, the whole class has been a mixed bag beyond the very top. Victor Wembanyama was the obvious jackpot for the San Antonio Spurs. Brandon Miller looks set to matter for the Charlotte Hornets, and Amen and Ausar Thompson have both shown well for the Houston Rockets and Detroit Pistons, respectively.

In the NBA, he has never finished a season above 36.5% from three. To make matters worse for that original vision, Ja’Kobe Walter, Toronto’s first-round pick the next year, eventually passed him as a shooter while also bringing better defense.
