The Boston Celtics are on a roll this 2025-26 season, gearing up for another title chase. With their star, Jayson Tatum, back in action after a lengthy injury layoff, the team is gaining strength just as the playoffs loom. Head coach Joe Mazzulla's innovative leadership style has been pivotal, helping the Celtics secure second place in the Eastern Conference standings.
A shining example of Mazzulla's approach came during a December 21 road game against the Toronto Raptors, where the Celtics clinched a commanding 112-96 victory. Despite missing key players like Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, the team remained resilient. Payton Pritchard and Derrick White stepped up, scoring 33 and 15 points, respectively, showcasing the depth of Boston’s roster.
Derrick White recently shared an intriguing story on his "White Noise" podcast about Mazzulla’s unconventional coaching method. Instead of dictating the lineup and matchups, Mazzulla empowered the players to decide.
"Usually, the coaches tell you who's starting and who you're guarding," White explained. "But Joe was like, ‘You guys decide.’
It felt like we were coaches for a moment, and it worked."
This bold move highlights the trust Mazzulla places in his players, a trust that's paying dividends as leaders like Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum, and Derrick White rise to the occasion. The Celtics are proving why they're a force in the East.
Derrick White's performance hasn't gone unnoticed. Cleveland Cavaliers head coach Kenny Atkinson recently praised White as a top-5 player in the NBA after Boston's victory over the Cavaliers.
When questioned about Atkinson’s remarks, Mazzulla acknowledged White’s exceptional two-way play, emphasizing his ability to inspire confidence and elevate his teammates. "He’s a connector," Mazzulla noted, "and we have a bunch of guys like that."
Despite the spotlight from Boston’s 2024 championship, White remains one of the league’s underrated talents. Yet, with endorsements like Atkinson’s, his reputation is steadily rising, cementing his status as a key contributor to the Celtics' ongoing success.
