Kawhi Leonard’s possible return to Toronto is still stuck in limbo, but Stephen Jackson says the move already feels far along behind the scenes.
On All the Smoke, the former NBA star said Leonard may already have put down roots in the city.
“Man, they say Kawhi got a house in Toronto already. Investigating?
If y’all want this s&&t going through, trust me, this s**t is going through. Trust me.”
Jackson’s remark does not prove Leonard has actually bought a home, but it adds to the sense that the former Finals MVP is expecting to be back with the franchise he led to the 2019 title.
That expectation is colliding with an unresolved NBA investigation tied to Leonard’s endorsement deals. The league is still looking into his reported $28 million agreement with Aspiration and his connections to other companies linked to Clippers business interests.
The reported trade that would send Leonard from the Clippers back to the Raptors has already been agreed to in principle, with Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, and major draft capital heading the other way. But the deal has not been finalized.
The holdup is simple: Toronto does not want to take on any punishment that could come from the investigation.
NBA investigators reportedly found no evidence that Clippers owner Steve Ballmer secretly routed sponsor money to Leonard to get around the salary cap. From there, the focus shifted to the Clippers’ role in connecting Leonard with his apparent sponsors, whether that crossed any cap rules, and whether the team failed to properly oversee employees involved in the process.
The Clippers have said they introduced Leonard to companies that already had business ties to the organization, but they insist that kind of introduction happens all the time. They also say they did not negotiate or set the terms of Leonard’s endorsement deals.
For now, that uncertainty keeps everything frozen. The Raptors are waiting on the league’s final word before they make the move official, because they do not want to absorb any penalties that could come attached to Leonard.
Leonard has also been linked to Raptors-related events, which has only fueled the idea that he is already comfortable with the possibility of returning. Jackson’s house claim, if nothing else, adds another layer to that belief.
Still, nothing is settled. The NBA has pushed back on reports that the Clippers were effectively cleared, and there is no final ruling yet.
Any penalties could make the situation even messier, especially with the league also having to weigh possible NBPA resistance if the ruling is seen as limiting players’ ability to negotiate their own endorsement agreements.
Until the investigation is finished, Leonard remains with the Clippers. But if Jackson’s read is right, Toronto may already be waiting for him.
