The Clippers may be staring at a Kawhi Leonard exit, and they already have a name circled for what comes next: Jaylen Brown.
Los Angeles is reportedly doing more than just bracing for life without Leonard. The team is also exploring Brown as a possible replacement, with the Boston Celtics forward emerging as one of the franchise’s top targets if Leonard’s future in L.A. falls apart. One league executive put it bluntly: they “want Brown bad.”
That pursuit makes sense only if the Clippers can first turn Leonard into something useful. Tomer Azarly of ClutchPoints reported that Brown would become the Clippers’ top target if they move on from Leonard and don’t give him the extension he wants. In that scenario, Brown would be the player they try to build around next.
The Leonard situation, though, sounds increasingly close to a breaking point. Chris Haynes and Shams Charania both reported that talks between the Clippers and Raptors are active and serious, but also stuck in a stalemate. Haynes said the Clippers still want more than Toronto is offering, then made his view clear on NBA TV’s The Association.
“I think it’s very unlikely that Kawhi Leonard returns to the Los Angeles Clippers. I think it’s a situation where it’ll be hard to put the toothpaste back in the tube,” Haynes concluded on NBA TV’s The Association.
Charania echoed that on SportsCenter, saying the discussions could continue “over the next few hours or even potentially tomorrow,” but the direction is obvious.
“But all signs point to both these sides being motivated, and the future is nearing its end. Kawhi Leonard’s tenure is nearing its end in Los Angeles. He’s been there seven years, and the Clippers have not given him any indication that they want to give him a contract extension.”
Charania also noted that Leonard has one year and $50 million left on his deal, and that while other teams would be willing to extend him, “there’s only one place he would commit to long term, and that’s the Toronto Raptors.”
If the Clippers do land a package of a young player and draft assets from Toronto, the path to Brown could open up in a hurry. The idea would be to route those assets in a three-team deal and send them to Boston in exchange for Brown.
Brown’s name is not out there by accident. The Celtics forward has reportedly grown frustrated with the organization’s approach, even after a season in which he helped Boston win 56 games while Jayson Tatum missed months with an Achilles injury. Adam Himmelsbach of the Boston Globe reported that the Celtics have continued to take calls on Brown, and that his frustration has only grown.
Brown’s situation has already been complicated by earlier trade chatter. He was once part of the Giannis Antetokounmpo sweepstakes, and after talks with the Trail Blazers fell apart following their acquisition of Ja Morant, he still appears to be on the market.
For the Clippers, the next move could define everything: how they handle Leonard, what they can squeeze out of Toronto, and whether that opens the door to a run at Brown.
