AJ Lawson Stuns at Raptors 905's New Facility Opening

Raptors 905 unveils an impressive new practice facility in Mississauga, signaling a major investment in player development and community engagement.

AJ Lawson couldn't resist testing his skills on the Raptors 905's brand-new practice court. As a player on a two-way contract, splitting his time between the G-League team in Mississauga and the Toronto Raptors, Lawson was eager to try every trick in the book on this fresh surface at the Paramount Fine Foods Centre.

"I tried some trick shots to claim the title of the first to do it on this court," Lawson shared with a grin. "But nothing felt as good as dunking. It's a great gym."

Lawson and his teammates have already had several practices at this new facility, which is conveniently attached to their home arena. The practice court's formal unveiling was attended by a host of dignitaries, including Mississauga Mayor Carolyn Parrish, NBA G League President Shareef Abdur-Rahim, MLSE COO Nick Eaves, and Raptors 905 VP Courtney Charles.

The 16,000-square-foot facility, a collaboration between the City of Mississauga and MLSE, boasts a full-sized court with three baskets, state-of-the-art locker rooms, a comprehensive fitness and training area, a medical and rehab space, and a player lounge with dining facilities.

Raptors 905 head coach Drew Jones emphasized the importance of the facility in developing NBA-ready talent. "It allows us to train with purpose and consistency," Jones noted.

"In the G League, with roster changes and travel, consistency can be elusive. This facility provides that stable environment crucial for growth."

Charles highlighted the 24/7 access as a game-changer. "Having a space available anytime means we can focus on individual skills like free throws and dribbling whenever needed," Charles explained. "Creating a comfortable environment fosters development."

Raptors 905 is the first G League team to have an exclusive NBA regulation court, a fact that excites Lawson. "It's amazing. It shows the 905's commitment to helping players grow," he said.

Thanks to the partnership with the City of Mississauga, the facility will also host basketball development camps and community activities during and after the G League season.

"Mississauga is known for producing great talent and having top-notch sports venues," Mayor Parrish stated. "Our partnership with Raptors 905 and MLSE elevates sports in Mississauga. This new gym is a win for both the team and the community."

For Lawson, who grew up in nearby Brampton and attended high school in Mississauga, the facility's impact on local youth is significant. "As a kid, I played more outdoors because there weren't many indoor options," he recalled.

"Now, kids in Mississauga have another place to train. It’s inspiring for them to see the path from 905 to the NBA right in front of them."

The opening concluded with Raptors 905 players hosting a basketball clinic for over 50 children from local youth organizations, marking the first community use of the new court.
