The Toronto Maple Leafs are facing a pivotal moment in their 2025-26 season. With a record of 29-28-12 through 69 games, they’re on the brink of missing the playoffs for the first time in a decade. This could lead to significant changes within the organization, potentially starting with the head coaching position.
One name that’s been floated around is veteran coach Pete DeBoer. DeBoer recently shared his insights on Leafs Morning Take with Nick Alberga and Jay Rosehill. He discussed the challenges of coaching in the NHL, the importance of accountability, and his recent Olympic experience.
DeBoer emphasized the competitive nature of the league, noting, “It’s a tough league to coach and win in. The parity this year has been amazing.
If you think about some of the teams that are in playoff spots now and some that aren’t, I don’t think anyone would have predicted that type of turnover. It shows how quickly things can change.”
Accountability has been a buzzword in Toronto this season. DeBoer weighed in on its significance, explaining, “Accountability starts at the top and works its way down.
It’s a fine line, and it’s a word that gets thrown around easily. Last year, when they had 100-plus points, you didn’t hear about accountability.
It’s common in the NHL when you have a down year.”
DeBoer also reflected on his Olympic coaching debut in Milano Cortina. “Being in a room with the best coaches in the world makes you better.
Representing Canada and working with players of great character, like Sidney Crosby, is an honor. Sid sets the tone with his willingness to embrace any role, which filters through the team.”
Looking ahead, DeBoer spoke about what he seeks in his next coaching opportunity. “I’m looking for fit, similar to a player.
You consider who you’ll be working with and the situation. There aren’t many bad situations in the NHL anymore, with strong ownership and stable management throughout the league.”
As the Maple Leafs navigate their challenges, decisions made in the coming months could shape their future. Whether DeBoer becomes part of that journey remains to be seen, but his insights offer a valuable perspective on what it takes to succeed in the NHL.
