The Toronto Maple Leafs are diving back into action post-Olympic break, and one of their top priorities is figuring out Bobby McMann’s future with the team. While there’s been plenty of buzz about McMann potentially being moved at the NHL trade deadline, the situation might be taking a new turn.
Insider David Pagnotta reports that the Leafs are in talks with McMann’s camp about a contract extension. This development suggests that whether McMann stays or goes hinges on these negotiations.
“The Toronto Maple Leafs like him a lot, too. And they’re actively engaged in contract talks right now, with him and his agent to see if they can come to terms on an extension,” Pagnotta shared.
McMann, set to become an unrestricted free agent, has caught the eye of several contenders thanks to his solid play and team-friendly cap hit. The Edmonton Oilers and Colorado Avalanche are among the teams showing interest in the 29-year-old winger.
This season, McMann has been impressive, notching 19 goals and 32 points in 56 games. He’s on track to surpass last year’s numbers, making it clear why the Maple Leafs are eager to keep him in the fold.
So, what might a new deal for McMann entail? Pagnotta speculates that a five-year contract with an average annual value (AAV) of $5 million could seal the deal.
There’s even talk that McMann might consider a hometown discount, potentially bringing the AAV closer to $4.5 million. This could provide the Leafs with some much-needed cap relief.
However, some analysts argue that a $4 to $5 million range might be steep for McMann. Yet, with the rising salary cap, middle-six forwards have been signing for around $5 million AAV in recent seasons. Given McMann’s trajectory as a potential two-time 20-goal scorer, his camp’s demands seem justified.
Pagnotta also noted that if the Leafs and McMann’s representatives can’t reach an agreement soon, the team might opt to trade the determined winger. The potential return isn’t expected to be substantial, indicating that a trade would be more about salvaging value for a player who could otherwise leave for nothing.
