Toronto Great: White Players Can't Be Face Of NBA

As former NBA player Charlie Villanueva ignites debate over racial dynamics in the league, Cooper Flagg's impressive performance invites questions about who truly can be the face of the NBA.

Cooper Flagg’s rapid rise has already put him in the conversation with the NBA’s biggest names, but one former Mavericks player stirred up a different kind of debate about the young Dallas forward.

Flagg, fresh off Rookie of the Year honors in 2025-26, has opened his second NBA season looking every bit like an All-NBA candidate. Through his first five games of 2026-27, he’s averaging 26.8 points, 6.6 assists and 6.0 rebounds per game.

Still, the conversation around Flagg took a sharp turn when Charlie Villanueva weighed in on whether a white player can be the face of the league. Villanueva, who played in the NBA from 2005-16 and had a late stint with the Mavericks, made the comments on the “To The Baha” podcast with Thoe Pinson and other former NBA players.

“ This might sound crazy, but I don’t think in 2026 a white dude could be - I’m gonna be real - could be the face of the league, if I’m being honest,” Villanueva said."Because it's a Black league, right?"

The exchange drew attention quickly, and Villanueva didn’t back away from it afterward. He later doubled down on the same point, saying, "When is the last time we’ve seen a white man be the face of the league?

Don’t say Larry Bird, they had to pair him up with Magic," Villanueva said. "When was the last time a white man was single-handedly the best player in the league?”

Villanueva then tried to clarify his stance on social media, where he said the NBA is "70 to 75 percent Black."

"I see the comments BUT I still don't think some of y'all understand what I'm trying to say," Villanueva captioned his past. "And for the record, Cooper Flagg is HIM, wanna my favorite players!"

Maple Leafs Let A Vital Home Point Slip Over One Costly Mistake

Jack Roslovic did enough to give the Maple Leafs a chance at home, scoring both Toronto goals in a 3-2 loss to the Utah Mammoth at Scotiabank Arena. The Leafs had to grind for their offense, and Sergei Bobrovsky turned aside 33 of 36 shots, but the game still tilted on a late sequence that left Toronto staring at a missed opportunity for a valuable point.

With the score tied, a costly penalty put the Leafs on the penalty kill at the worst possible time, and Utah made them pay on the ensuing power play. It was the kind of finish that stings because Toronto had already done the hard part of getting back level, only to watch one mistake undo the work and send the home crowd away with a frustrating result. Maple Leafs Trade Piece Emil Andrae Suddenly Faces Another Uncertain Turn

Emil Andraes season has already taken one sharp turn, and it may be headed for another. After being dealt by the Maple Leafs to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Sept. 28 in a trade that sent several players between the two clubs, the young defenseman has now found himself on waivers as Columbus continues sorting out its roster picture.

Andrae has appeared in five games for the Blue Jackets this season, but his immediate future is now up in the air again. If he clears waivers, the next stop is expected to be the AHLs Cleveland Monsters, leaving the Leafs former trade piece once more waiting to see where he fits in a transaction that has already moved plenty of pieces around. Maple Leafs Suddenly Face An Emil Andrae Decision Again

Emil Andrae is back on the waiver wire, and with it comes another familiar question for the Maple Leafs: whether they want to get back into the mix on a player they already moved once this year. Columbus put the defenseman on waivers after a brief run of five games this season, reopening a situation that had seemed settled only after a busy stretch of transactions.

Andraes path has already been unusually winding, with two trades this year and Toronto among the teams involved in sending him to Columbus in a multi-player deal. Now the Leafs have a chance to consider whether a reunion makes sense, even if nothing has been confirmed yet, and the timing alone makes this one worth watching for a club that knows him well enough to at least revisit the conversation.
