Every summer brings at least one trade idea that catches fire online, and this one has plenty of fuel. The latest bit of hockey fan fiction making the rounds has the Maple Leafs sending defenseman Morgan Rielly to the Predators for forward Steven Stamkos.
There’s no real reporting behind it. No major insider has said the two sides are talking, and there’s been no sign the front offices have even kicked the tires. But as far as armchair GM material goes, it’s easy to see why people are talking.
For Toronto, the lure is obvious. Stamkos has long been the kind of name Leafs fans have dreamed about, especially since he first tested free agency back in 2016. The idea of him finishing his career in his home province has been a fantasy for more than a decade.
If Toronto could somehow pull it off, the payoff on paper is huge. A player with two Stanley Cup rings and a reputation as a top-tier goal scorer would give the Leafs even more punch in their top six, along with the veteran presence fans always seem to want when playoff talk starts.
Nashville’s side of the equation is built around a different kind of need. In theory, Rielly would give the Predators a boost on the blue line and a possible partner for Roman Josi. The appeal there is that Rielly has shown he can fit alongside younger NHL talent, which is a category Nashville has plenty of.
Of course, this wouldn’t be a straight one-for-one deal if it ever got real. Toronto would probably have to add something else to the package, whether that’s draft capital, a bottom-six winger, or a prospect Nashville would actually want.
The cap piece is the easy part. Rielly carries a $7.5 million cap hit, while Stamkos sits at $8 million, so the money lines up cleanly enough. The bigger obstacle is that both players have full no-movement clauses, which means they control where they go.
So yes, it’s the kind of summer rumor that makes for fun timeline debate and kills a few quiet days in July. It can stay a wild “what if” for now. But if Toronto somehow ended up with Stamkos, the Leafs’ top six and power play would look a whole lot better.
